My Ds has had a google and has asked that I buy him some antibiotic cream for his spots. Is this possible or do I need to go via a GP?

To get antibis that really work you need to see a gp.

DD16 has tried loads of creams/washes from the chemist to no avail and refuses to go and ask for antibiotics in case she puts on weight. Browsing beautybay.com I read good reviews of the Alpha-H Clear Skin Collection so I thought I'd get some for DD, but I didn't have great expectations. Well how wrong I was- we are both amazed with how well it is working in just two weeks and DD is thrilled to bits as nearly all the acne has gone. I've just ordered some more. Might be worth a try OP?

Serendials · 07/01/2015 17:13

Ooh i'll give that a go. If it doesn't work for him i'll make him a GP appointment.

My DS was prescribed antibiotic lotion for fairly bad acne and it worked a treat within a month or two. Certainly worth a try.
The GP said if it didn't work after a few months he could give something stronger orally.

Roseformeplease · 07/01/2015 17:24

We have been through the creams, two different types of anti-bs and are taking DS to the dermatologist for Roaccutane next week. Nothing else worked.

Lunastarfish · 07/01/2015 17:27

I'd go to the GP. I had a terrible acne breakout at 26, I was prescribed antibiotics for 3 months and a lotion I had to apply twice a day. It began clearing up within a week and until my recent pregnancy I've not had an outbreak of lumps since (still get spots but no way as bad before).

Also worth googling is 'the acne cure' it's a book. In a nut shell you use benzoyl peroxide cream, a sililic acid face wash and something else I forget as a face cleaning ritual.
Three of my family have tried it and it gets rids of the spots
There was also an article in the daily mail recently about a silver cream that is supposed to habe good results.

gingerbreadmam · 07/01/2015 17:44

could be completely wrong here but is roaccutane the one they associate with causing depression?

i was prescribed oxytretacyline tablets by my gp which worked great. my dp hd these too but was alergic and has since been prescribed a lotion called zineryrt which worked for him. the gp is a good port of call.

as an aside and dm fail but i saw an article on there today about someone whos daughter had severe acne and purchased some cream of the internet with silver in it that cured it.

We just went to the docs last night about 15yo ds1's acne. Doc just looked at us and correctly guessed why we were there. DS1 now has 8 weeks worth of antibiotics to take one daily and we've to go back before the 8 weeks are up to see the doc again.

Roseformeplease · 07/01/2015 17:59

Roaccutane can be a miracle and only occasionally causes (or worsens) depression. It is a cure, not a treatment and, we hope, will sort things out where all else has failed. Not good in sexually active females without bullet proof contraceptives as it can cause extreme birth defects. DS will be carefully monitored and it is a last resort after a year of all other possible treatments.

gingerbreadmam · 07/01/2015 18:00

if anyone is interested it was silver serum that apparently solved all the womens problems on daily mail. not horrendously priced may have to try it myself.

gingerbreadmam · 07/01/2015 18:23

oh sounds like you have done your research rosa. i dont know much about it jus recall the name popping up in articles. sure ds will be fine hope it helps.

CalicoBlue · 07/01/2015 19:40

My ds 17 had acne, he did not want to go to the doctors. I insisted and took him, he was given the choice oral antibiotics or cream. We chose the cream and it started working within days. Have a repeat prescription and don't have to use it as much now.

amidaiwish · 07/01/2015 19:45

another thumbs up for alpha-H here. it really is fantastic
(i was terrible for over cleansing/scrubbing)

mygrandchildrenrock · 10/01/2015 15:24

I dragged my 16 yr old ds to the doctors, he wouldn't talk to the doctor or even really look at him. As the acne was on his face, particularly chin, the doctor could see the problem. He's had antibiotic cream/lotion which goes on twice a day and the difference is amazing. He's had it for about 3 months now and still has to use it, he has some redness but no spots/lumps at all. I cannot believe the difference and wished I'd dragged him there months ago and not wasted a year buying stuff that wasn't strong enough.

jellybeans · 10/01/2015 15:29

My DD (18) has tried everything and nothing seems to work. She may have to go down the Roaccutane route too :(

Soveryupset · 10/01/2015 16:29

I have recently read some research about the role of sugar in health, including acne. It quoted clinical trials where teenagers were taken off sugar completely for 1 month and their acne reduced by 75%. I can dig out the name of the researchers if you are interested. Worth a try..?

For what it's worth it's worked on my DD1, she is a pre-teen but had lots of spots appearing recently (is hitting puberty) and after only a week of no sugar at all, the skin is clearing massively. It is hard work though as sugar is everywhere and in everything.

Cafeconleche · 16/01/2015 00:35

Silver Serum - a friend of mine who has suffered from terrible acne for years started using it about 3 months ago and the difference it's made has been staggering. I think there was an article about it in the Daily Fail recently - I never pay much notice to their product-placement articles, but it caught my eye because I have first hand experience. I think it costs about 12 quid.

JumeirahJane5 · 16/01/2015 13:56

Please, please, please do not use Roaccutane!!! I was prescribed it in my 20s about 20 years ago. My face is so sensitive to sunlight now & goes really red all the time! My youngest daughter suffered acne like me too recently. She was prescribed tetracycline, which does work at first but only for a while as your body becomes immune to this antibiotic. So inevitabley the acne came back with a vengeance. However, through extensive research I found an amazing light therapy treatment that works wonders without pumping your body full of harmful drugs. Please try this therapy it is amazing, you will not be disappointed I promise you. It is manufactured by a company called Lumie, visit their website to find out more about it. They state that you will start to notice results after about 3-4 weeks, but it only took my daughter 2 weeks (using it every day) for the redness to calm down and the acne to begin to clear. At first I had to nag my daughter to use it every night, but it soon became a habit for her without me even reminding her.

Although Lumie's website will give you all the information with video footage etc, I ended up buying our light therapy unit from Amazon at a cheaper price. Please try this therapy you have nothing to lose. Let us know how you get on.

xXx
