Has anyone manged to find that holy grail, the affordable car insurance for your learner child?

DS will be driving a 1400cc car which I am the main insured person on. I am thinking we should swap this around so that it's his insurance that I am on.

Any tips?

DS1 (just 20) passed his test recently. We are insured with Direct Line and have been for many years, never made any claims. They refuse to insure DS until he has been driving for one year. We've asked them twice. I don't understand why given that others on here clearly not being told the same thing! Even when DH suggested that he would move our policy (for two cars) they wouldn't budge...

We got a VW polo 1.2 about 4 months ago for DD 21 and DS 17 (he is the learner), the insurance is with CO-OP and car has a black box.

The initial cost was £1700 but have had £400 refund so far due to good driving. Will go up again shortly as DS due to take test.

M & S refused to insure my daughter on my car as she was under 18 (did have a convertible at the time so not sure if it was the car or her age) and quoted £1800 to add her once she was 18. She ended up with a 1.0 Corsa which cost £1800 to insure. I went through a broker and no black box (her driving wasn't the issue I didn't want her penalised for my driving and I was paying). The second year it was less than half that and this year it has stayed the same although she now has 1.2 car

Stonecircle, my daughters have their own car and their own Direct Line insurance policy. Which I pay for of course!!!! We therefore have three cars. When I asked about adding one of the girls as a named driver on to my policy ( so that she could borrow my car occasionally ) I too was told that she had to have had held a driving licence for a year. I think this is standard with them.
