Mid-sleeper bed, teen boy.. uncool vs practical in a small space?

My 11-year-old is running out of storage space in his room. It's too small to accommodate a double, even a small one, as people seem to like. He has a desk (by the window, which I'd rather keep, as he can work by natural light) so a mid-sleeper bed with a desk underneath isn't necessary.
Just a bit concerned that investing in a bed like that will be a false economy if he ends up hating it when he hits his teens. He's currently in an ordinary single bed.

What about a high sleeper? Then he can have a comfy seat/tv set up underneath at some point if he wants somewhere to just chill and play computer games?

my 13 yr old has a mid sleeper, its very uncool but saves a lot of space and his ceiling is too low for a high sleeper (am a bad parent)

I had a mid sleeper and hated it.
For Christmas when I was 13 I asked for a normal bed, parents listened and learnt their lesson for younger siblings.

low ceiling is also an issue, hence mid sleeper rather than high sleeper...

The problem with midi sleepers is they all leave a heap of space behind the chests, cub ours or desks under them. Great for stuffing plastic crates of kids soft toys, etc in, but far less good for older DCs stuff.

DD1 and me spent ages on this problem and in the end she went with a lift top single and lots of shelves above it and on the wall at the end.

It's not perfect, the shelves all have to have fancy internal wall fittings and she doesn't keep them tidy, but it does look grown up.

What about a Daybed? The white ikea one is lovely.

What about getting a joiner to build something like this?

Mid-sleeper bed, teen boy.. uncool vs practical in a small space?

MIDI sleeper beds are not that big.
My ds had one as a young teen and he quickly outgrew it.
You can't dangle your feet of the edge.

Apparently, "Day beds are girly!" even though that would be my personal choice. A single with good storage underneath, be that a lift-up thing, or built-in drawers.
Wall on one side of boy's bed is by the stairs so that wall is just panelling (won't support anything more than very light shelves) so I wanted to maximise height.
Grr... kids! When I was his age all I had was a mattress on the floor!!

By the way, I'm new to mums net. It's great to have so many replies, and so fast. Really helps to discuss. Thanks.

I've just got rid of my two DCs' mid and high-sleeper beds. They were great when we got them (aged 8 and 4) but they are now 16 and nearly 12 and had really outgrown them, particularly DS, who at 16 is 6ft tall and solidly built - most mid/high-sleepers are designed for people a child's height and weight. And they are not good for teenage lounging around on...

exexpat · 17/10/2014 14:49

Oh - and I think day beds would also not be ideal for a teenage boy if there's any chance he may be quite tall - very restricted foot room.

Idefix · 17/10/2014 14:54

What about the bed odda bed from ikea? It has a white frame and black draws which provide plenty of storage. Can also be added to with a headboard that provides further storage. We bought it as a make do for my ds 16yrs and he is v happy with it so it has become a more permanent fixture.

bigTillyMint · 17/10/2014 15:10

Whatever you get, make sure it is well built for a full-sized male!

I have also just got rid of DD(15)'s high sleeper for a small double and she is sleeping so much better. We also switched her fairly small room around and it looks so much better. She has a couple of crates under the bed with art stuff and other stuff in.

I am planning to get rid of DS(13 but the size of a 16yo)'s high sleeper next year - will also get him a small double. He briefly had a cabin bed when he was about 6 but it just fell apart - it wasn't built strongly enough!

blueagave · 17/10/2014 18:04

Thanks, people.
Looks like mid- and high-sleepers are out. It all makes sense.
Will investigate getting a joiner to make some kind of under-bed storage for his existing single bed. That, or go to IKEA!

Art stuff is our major reason for the lift top bed. Art sketch books and final pieces can be very large. We decided we needed the freedom to arrange things to use all the space, rather than draws.

Also there is room to tuck away the electric keyboard which is too long for draws

I'm currently trying to persuade my 12 year old to give up her mid sleeper! It's pretty old (although Flexa) and rather wobbly these days. She's not convinced, but has agreed to maybe sorting it out next summer ... I have said I'll replace her bed with an Ikea Flaxa bed (she wants the pull out underbed - atm she has a mattress on the floor under her mid sleeper, which is handy) which also has drawers and a headboard with storage. DS has the Malm single, and you can get drawers for that too.
