MY dd started college 4 weeks ago, she is 16 and is feeling terrible grown up swanning around in Canterbury with her new friends! Good for her! She mentioned last night joining the NUS because of discounts etc? Can anyone tell me about it, how she can join etc. Just looked at the web page and was a bit Confused. Thanks .

I'm Confused that you were Confused lol

It's just a student discount card. I have one, useful for proving ones student status to gain discounts on stuff.

Both my DDs have one - essential for discounts from Topshop etc Wink

You sign up online stating basic details ie name etc, submit a photo and pay. You can either then get the card delivered to school/college of home. I filled mine out at college and university ...it seemed easier! Also a 16-25 railcard is really really handy! It takes a 3rd of train journeys except in peak times I think ...but that might of changed so it's all fairs... Also a website called student beans is worth checking out... Sometimes has grouping voucher offers in pizza places.... Ahhhh to be a student again!

...maybe she could ask her student union representatives for help

You have to pay for it now. Look at the list of savings and check whether she'll actually get anything out of it before she shells out the membership cost.

There is nothing to be confused about, she just needs to register, upload a photo and pay the fee. I study with the OU and have one, I have saved lots of money at New Look, Top Shop, Jack Wills, Superdrug, Zizzi, Bella Italia, Staples, Rymans, Matalan and many more. The discounts are all listed on the site

secretsquirrels · 13/10/2014 19:49

I think they cost about £12 a year which DS more than gets back in Pizza Hut discount alone.

Thank you all...........need to upload a photo then, think I have a spare passport one somewhere! Sorry to seem a bit dopey........am struggling atm with three 16yr olds all doing different things and my dh who is about to be diagnosed with a second serious illness, he already has battled cancer for 6 years...........I could do with some help!

I'll be in your shoes next year. Looking at 6th form options now. Have your 3 gone in different directions? Mine are planning to. Student services will help your dd sorry stuff. X

Hi........yes sort of. My dd recently left 6th form, school has been in special measures twice in 2 years.........she is now in college in Canterbury doing Art/Design for 2 yrs, costing us a fortune, bus pass alone was £400. My two db`s are still in the 6th form, but one is leaving in March, he has been selected to go to Harrogate Army College. I am finding it hard to split myself 4 ways at the moment!! Stress is not good for my dh..........there is always plenty of it around!! x

Sorry your DH is not well triplet.

Mabelface · 14/10/2014 07:59

Sounds stressful. Do you get any down time?

triplets · 14/10/2014 08:09

Yes I do by going to bed at 9pm so I get a few hours to sit and read, or go on here etc. My dh sleeps on a the bed settee atm, as he is up and down all night so everyone else gets disturbed. I get up at 6.40am to make sure everyone is up and organized then generally like now I sneak back to bed for an hour!
