Teenager dreading starting 6th form as hates exams

DD loathes exams and whilst she got 11 GCSEs they were not as high as she wanted. She is now full of angst about starting 6th form and doing more exams and I am worried she will spiral into depression (me too as am only just recovering from (our!) GCSEs). I can feel the black clouds of gloom gathering at the gate... Anyone else got this at home?

My DD1 is panicking about going in to y11. She has high aspirations but only moderate academic ability, and only moderate stamina for working. It will be an interesting year.

Does your DD have a goal in mind? Can she focus on that rather than the exams?

Is she doing a levels? My son is doing a BTEC course and there are no exams (not sure if that is the same for all BTEC or all colleges)

It's not too late. Look at college to do a BTEC extended diploma. They are the equivalent of 3 A levels. No exams. All course work and you can go to uni if you want to with the qualification. They are really suited for people who get very stressed about exams. She will fly at it. Give it really serious thought.

Thanks Teenandtween. My daughter has no goal, which is the problem. I am not suprised your DD1 is panicking, I think the pressure on them is awful and quite frankly I felt wrung out by the time the last exam was done! I just tried to give a sense of perspective but it is peer pressure as much as the school. Good luck

Hi ChillySundays and Heyho111 - yes, I agree what a good idea. I don't think she will go for it though as she runs with a pack that are high achievers and so she feels she needs to keep up even though it makes her so miserable. I am going to Google it now though and present her with it as an option tonight. thank you both

The only problem with BTEC is that they are specific eg: business studies, sport etc so you need an idea of what you want to do. My DS does but my DD didn't and like yours did not deal with exams too well but went down the A level route. Did not enjoy it but managed to come out with two Cs
