Proof of ID for 18yo

DD is 18 soon and talking of getting provisional licence for ID. No interest in driving. But £50 seems a lot just to prove age. Has anyone experience of the Civilian Card? Have seen an article saying it's not accepted everywhere but that was quite old. Carrying passport probably not a good idea considering how many bus passes she's managed to lose!

Please share your experiences!

ds very unhappy that he didnt have proof of age for his 18th birthday bash. his passport had expired and he didnt yet have a licence. the licence does last for 10 years so i would go for that, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Oh I thought provisional only lasted a year! Showing my age... that's a bit better then.

Many places will only accept driving license or passport and I don't think carrying a passport around is a good idea.
Also they do ID almost everywhere not like when I was 15 and we all went in clubs and pubs.
DS easily looks his age,18 and yet he is ID'd every time he goes to a pub or supermarket to buy alcohol.

So no one has a Civilian Card then?

Never heard of it. Which leads me to suspect it might not be accepted.
I know (from staff) that it's policy in several large chains to accept only driving license or passport.

My niece did exactly the same thing. She bought a provisional licence to use as ID even though she had no intention of learning to drive as she lives in a city so has good public transport and a dad who will ferry her anywhere else at the drop of a hat
She has just turned 20 now and has still not learned to drive - so it must have been for ID purposes only

Do you mean a Citizen Card? If you do, then no, most places don't accept it.

Floop · 03/08/2014 21:33

Just get a provisional. No arguments with bouncers if they are not familiar with the Citizen Card.

I assume she will want to learn to drive before 28? They last 10 years.

£5 a year to have a valid ID isn't too expensive.

Weirdly there is a Citizen Card and a Civilian Card, so they are looking increasingly like a bad idea. Driving licence it is! Thanks all.

Most places have a rule that they will only accept a passport or a driving licence as proof of age, mainly because the alternatives (student IDs or age verification cards) are much easier to make fake copies of and there are no repercussions for doing so.

It's definitely worth getting a provisional licence even if it is just for identification purposes.
