Child benefit

Can anyone tells me what happens with child benefit payments when your teenager is 18 and about to leave FT education ? Do they automatically stop, or do I have to inform someone ? Thanks.

I got a letter recently to say my cb will be less from sept . Am assuming this is because DD18 will be at Uni and no longer in college education.

AnyFucker · 12/05/2014 18:44

You get a letter then ? Not got one yet.

I got a letter I think, but you will get CB until the end of august even if they leave college in July.

Unless they get a full time job.

Do we have to notify then if she gets a job (she has) or is it done automatically through tax code/ national insurance jobby ?

I got a letter telling me when it would stop.

MojitoMadness · 12/05/2014 18:52

I think you have to notify them if she gets a job, but only if she's left school/college.

Got a letter a few weeks ago.
It informs you it will stop on 31st August (and what your new payment will be if you have younger dc)

usuallysuspect · 12/05/2014 18:54

You have to notify them if she gets a job.

I think she can work up to 24 hours though.

AnyFucker · 12/05/2014 18:55

Ah, she is working 20 hours.

I think the safest thing to do is to inform them. I got a letter about DD last week, saying the amount will stop from September.

DD is still in full time education next academic year though, despite being 19 in that school year. I'm pretty sure I still get something though.

Georgethesecond · 12/05/2014 18:58

Inform them. You don't want an overpayment.

AnyFucker · 12/05/2014 19:00

Spot on usual, I looked it up. Child benefit remains until last week in August of last year of FT education unless (amongst other things) the young person starts working more than 24 hours a week.

I reckon I do nothing then.

I remember looking it all up when My DS left college.

AnyFucker · 12/05/2014 19:16

I might still ring and just check < model citizen >

I think I rang them in the end too.

Was more complicated because DS didn't have a job when he left college but couldn't get jobseekers until the end of August when the child benefit ended.
