Car insurance costs

Reading the other thread on here about car insurance, i am interested to hear how much insurance is for teen boys and girls with their own cars.

I'd be grateful if you could share.

I started the other thread. To put DS on my policy as a named driver would have been £1500 (£1000 if I had been a new customer for the year.) I currently pay £200. When I put his details in as the policy holder and me and DH as named drivers it came out at an eyewatering £4500!! This is for a car that is one of the cheapest cars to insure I have been told.

Will definitely have to go for a black box scheme but even these were coming out at £3500 plus. Sob

£3500?! Gulp.

Within the next two years, we will have 2 girls and a boy starting to drive.

it's not the car, it's the nut behind the wheel. Teen boys have a 1 in 4 chance of a flowers-on-a-tree crash each year they drive, sometimes they take others with them, hence the big premiums. Your son may be nothing like this but that's not how insurance risk assessment works.

due to stupid EU rulings, girls are now classed as the same risk.

As soon as our son passed, we had a box installed by www.insurethebox.com. Many of his friends have had them fitted too so there's been no debate. At 17.5 years his insurance was about £800. A year later, and admittedly because it drives less as he's at uni, it's now £470 pa. Even a multicar deal couldn't beat that!
It really helped that most parents agreed that black boxes were a must so the offspring just accepted it en masse. Also, we've driven his car from time-to-time to keep the stats recorded by the box up-to-date and indicating good average speeds etc.

I know things are different now , but if I had a "Black Box" or any device in a Car when I was young . I would have just asked for lifts rather than Learn to drive.

Specialsubject, where did you get your statistics? If that were true, half to three quarters of boys who learn to drive at 17 would be dead before they reach twenty!
