Teenage worry

Just looking for advice. I have a 13 almost 14 yr old daughter. She has recently confided in me that she is having what sounds like panic attacks, she doesn't like being around people. This time last year she was full of confidence and was really chatty etc. now she just wants to be on her own. She had good friends she still sees and the usual high school girls she doesn't get on with but she says that doesn't bother her.
She doesn't like anything about herself even though I constantly praise her, she is lovely!
She can't sleep well because she says she hears voices telling her that she is horrible and ugly.
Do we just ride this out and hope its teenage hormone stuff or do I seek help? She isn't the same girl, she is so sad and I'm starting to worry she is getting to a stage that she will close off completely.
Thanks for any advice xx

Really sorry to hear this. It can be very hard to be a teenager and very hard to be the parent of one. I think if she was my DD I would take her to see the GP as the bit about hearing voices would concern me and I would want her checked by a medical professional and it would be good to have input on how to handle the panic attacks.

I agree - GP time.

Reassure her that you don't think she's 'mad' just that she needs some help dealing with the anxiety and sleeplessness. It sounds like depression/anxiety - quite common in adolescents, so don't worry too much but yes, get some help/advice before this gets out of hand.

It is very common for people and particularly children and adolescents to hear voices if they are depressed and/or anxious. If she's okay with it I would take her to the GP and meanwhile check out the 'Voice Collective' website which is informative and reassuring.
