One of my friends dd's went onto this ludicrous website called ask.com and got such bad replies from her questions, she cut herself and almost died. Never let your dc on it.

OP posts:

I have read that some teens have committed suicide as a result of going on this website.

Isn't it just a search engine? It used to be?

hootloop · 19/01/2014 20:04

Ahh have googled, you mean ask.fm

BelleateSebastian · 19/01/2014 20:06

I hope she is ok op. Ive seen some if my friends teens posts on there, it can be vile it seems to be where people can anonomously ask 'questions- on someone's page .... 'why are you so fat and ugly' sticks in my mind from friends teen dd Hmm Confused

Nice idea for a website, very bad in practicality.

I know quite a few people who have used this website without any abuse/bullying at all. However in my personal experience people can use it simply just to post annonymous abuse.

To OP, I don't think ask.fm would be the only thing that led to that though, it may have been part of the bullying that your friends DD faced, however her death would not have been 100% the fault of the website.

*however her near death.

This is why you need to have serious talks (constantly) with teens about the Net. They can be very naive about the malicious nature of other people and how anonymous can become personal very easily.

Monitor, monitor, monitor. Talk, talk, talk.

I posted about this site last year. Form spring, Snapchat, even FB can be trouble. You need to build awareness especially in younger children.
