How to treat adults with Asperger's Syndrome

I am a single dad trying to play the role of a mum too. I have a 26 year old son who has AS. He has never had any friends and has the usual disabilities of a person with AS. He sleeps as soon as he gets some spare time. sometimes he sleeps for 24 hours. My question is that how should I treat him? Should I be strict with him? Or should I let him do what he wants? Should I let him sleep as much as he wants? Should I force him to go out and do some activities? I need to know how a mum would have treated him? Thank you

He works but I have to set the alarm in the morning to make sure he gets up. he has had several warnings from his employer for being late and taking too long o do his work.

Is he on medication, Weare? If so, maybe they need to re-look at doses. Sleeping for 24 hours isn't normal. My friend's AS son had to have his medication increased during adolescence then reduced again as his hormones settled.

I have an adult with AS about to lodge with me so am interested in people's answers.

I would say 'no, don't let him sleep when he wants' Smile or he will sleep all the time. People with AS need a routine to motivate them or they may shut down and do nothing. I would maybe make some kind of rota, maybe he could cook a couple meals a week, do a bit of housework. He will probably also need a push to do any kind of exercise (maybe you could both join a gym and go together). Don't force him to go out and be sociable, you can encourage him but chances are he still wont want too.

No he is not on any medication at the moment. He has tried everything and nothing has worked for him. What is 'Weare'? Is it the name of a medication?

Weare is a short version of your name Grin

Blush Yes, sorry, I was just shortening Weareinittogether!

You asked what a mum would do... If it was me, I think I'd want him to go to see a doctor...

Weareinittogether · 19/01/2014 21:54

He has been to doctors, he has had many hours of counselling to no avail.

Counselling can help people cope with stress and other emotional difficulties, but sleeping for 24 hours at a time sounds like a medical problem rather than an emotional one. I was thinking he might be on medication that made him sleepy (a sedative), but if he isn't, I think he needs to go to his GP and say "I'm tired all the time. I sleep for 24 hour stretches. I'm getting into trouble at work because I can't get up, I'm late and I'm sleepy. What could it be? Can you help me?" If he doesn't want to do that, I think I'd be tempted to make an appointment with the GP yourself and explain your worries...
