My teenage boy has recently been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, which makes sense to him as he has always found peer groups difficult. Up until now he has done very well at school academically, but can't cope with the workload of A levels and is slipping behind badly. He is so rude and stubborn at home we can't address any of his organisational difficulties; he insists on doing athletics which is taking up all his spare time, and won't go to bed on time so is pretty exhausted. He doesn't want to discuss any of this stuff. Should we just let him flunk his work or try and address it?

Um… I’m not sure what to suggest… Rudeness and stubbornness could be part of his Asperger’s (poor communication and rigid thinking) and so could perfectionism and anxiety, which could lead to him not wanting to try at schoolwork if he feels he’s failing. Sorry I can’t be more helpful. Maybe ask on the Special Needs boards (children for traffic, or teens) for better advice?
