What do I do, my teenage DD2 has just had braces fitted and now refuses to eat?

DD2 has eating issues to start with, which has escalated since her dad passed away this April.

However, she was looking forward to getting braces and said she would follow all the orthodontist's guidelines. BUt, since having them fitted on Friday, she says she can't eat.

She's had nothing today apart from an ice lolly and won't agree to any of my suggestions for a 'soft' or liquid tea tonight. And she won't suggest any of her own alternatives either. We've reached a stalemate where I've said she could at least eat some of the waffles I'd bought her especially for breakfast this week, but which she went to school without eating!

I've said if she continues to not eat we'll abandon the orthodontic treatment and get the braces removed Sad

So far so good Smile He's coping really well with them & managing to eat.

Glad it's going well horsemad. DS took several days to be able to eat normally.

DS had his first tightening of the braces this morning and said it didn't hurt at all. I was quite relieved let alone him!

How far into the treatment is your DS nickname? DS has his next appt mid Dec.

can i join in this conversation? DD had her train tracks fitted this afternoon, and already one of the metal things they stick to your teeth has come free.......she is really distressed and is in a lot of pain. She was eating scrambled egg when she realised it was moving.

Are they going to charge me for this to be stuck back on (NHS)?

thenicknameiwantedisgone · 08/11/2013 00:14

horsemad he's only six weeks in so far. He has another appointment for tightening in six weeks time. He has top and bottom train tracks and an estimated 2 yr treatment time. Shame is that his teeth look perfect, it's just that there isn't enough room for them all to come down.

whoremoanergrainger no you shouldn't get charged. We were warned that if any came off just to phone up and get an emergency repair appointment. They said that sometimes the brackets don't stick, as in your case, otherwise it's usually due to eating good you shouldn't. Certainly no mention of charging was ever made to us.

Thanks thenickname. Phoned them this morning and they said it wasnt urgent, but eventually agreed that someone will see her.

We are both shattered as neither of us has had much sleep, her because "Her teeth all hurt" and me because "Her teeth all hurt"!!!! But she is desperately keen to go to school after to show them off to her friends, so i suppose that's a good thing.

we go today for DD2s - it's "only" taken 18 months since first referral as she needed to be see by a couple of different clinics, have surgery to remove two submerging molars, and finally get to the top of the waiting list.
I'm not looking forward to the next couple of days as she was really moaney in a lot of pain after the surgery and after the separators were put in last week, so i'm expecting more of the same. Have stocked up on chocolate milk for her Smile so that may help.

I got braces s an adult and could not eat properly for at least two months afterwards, maybe longer. It's like learning to eat all over again because you can not chew the same way etc. and for me, the braces hurt to eat with for at least 2 weeks, then were unfomfortable to eat with. And no, painkillers don't do anything.

Also just a heads up for future, whenecer i got my braces tightened or adjusted in any way, or got powerchains on, I again couldn't eat for a week to 2 weeks after the adjustment,

So my advice is to give her a break and let her eat when she's reqdy. Threatening to remove the braces is just unfair when there's nothing she can do about the pain/uncomfortableness of the braces and eating.

how can dd learn to eat with her twin blocks in? she only got fit yesterday btu so far is resided to take out for main meals, she had a little go with her lasagne last night and it ended in tears.

Horsemad · 26/11/2013 11:32

Is she in pain noyou?

My DS only has top fitted & has had no problems, he's even resigned himself to no pepsi at weekends, although I have said he can have some on Xmas Day. He's stopped chomping biscuits, and eats bigger portions than he ever did (v. fussy eater) so it's been a bit of a win win situation for me!

He used a bit of wax on the first day to alleviate chafing, but on the whole it's been a lot easier than I anticipated.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/11/2013 11:38

Its just practise - dont try with a whole meal at first - just snacks and dont ever ever try spaghetti Confused

Horsemad · 26/11/2013 11:44

My DS eats spaghetti all the time!

noyouhavehadawee · 26/11/2013 11:52

mild jaw ache she said she can live with and a bit of rubbing on one side so just got her some orajel ready for when comes in - just been and bought a trifle and some marshmallows thinking after tea when she has put em back in we will try some fun foods. I just read on internet some one said every meal takes out for that's another 24hrs back - surely that's b shit? it scared me anyway!

Horsemad · 26/11/2013 11:56

Oh they're removeable? I'd take them out for eating. My DS's are fixed, right faff cleaning round the brackets.

I've told him when they come off, we're having a party tea with all the banned foods & he can eat and eat and eat!

noyouhavehadawee · 26/11/2013 12:17

yeah they removable but say only to clean and should it but the size of them its near impossible - poor dd Sad.
