after spending another evening with ds either hogging the comp or moaning that msn isn't working I wish it had never been invented. I never use it as I only have one person to talk to and she has disapeared

southeastastra - my DS does on line gaming with kids all over the world too. Dare I say the word 'Runescape'?? Why does Runescape involve sitting up till 3am?? Grrrr.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 22/06/2006 18:48

It's great in some ways but in others it's a nightmare.... apart from hogging the PC. One of my dd's friends was dreadfully bullied through MSN use - verbal (well, written) abuse. Not very pleasant at all. Children don't always realise that, like on MN at times, that there's a real person at the other end.

I always say to my kids - don't type something you wouldn't say to a person on the phone or to their face.

southeastastra · 22/06/2006 18:49

themoon66 yes it's the same blinkin game! argh perhaps they know each other!!

themoon66 · 22/06/2006 18:59

My DS is known as Toasty. And if its yours he is playing with, we will have to have some agreement that they both pack up by 10pm, so they are not soo blooming difficult to hoist of bed of a school morning!

southeastastra · 22/06/2006 19:02

i think mine is just using his name, i will find out, i try to make him finish at 10 but its always another 10 mins. he even goes on it before school because that's when his mates in the philippines are online!

themoon66 · 22/06/2006 19:05

Ah yes. He goes on it whilst eating breakfast. And, yes, its always 'hang on' when I say 'come on its bedtime'. Or he gets all stressed coz the computer is not loading the game quick enough (we have ancient old computer).

Tinker · 22/06/2006 19:05

I won't let mine use it. After getting an official warning from aol about something she posted on a chatroom there - waaaay out of her depth - think she's too young (9). Still asks to sign up though.

themoon66 · 22/06/2006 19:21

Dare I ask what she posted?? I have a theory that AOL are bit nanny-ish.

Tinker · 22/06/2006 19:23

She asked "anyone want sex" and something else. Was quite pleased about nannyish aol in this case. It's scared off chat anyway.

themoon66 · 22/06/2006 19:25

Blimey. That IS a bit forward for an 9 yr old. I'd better keep a closer eye on DS. He has just walked in and his first words are 'mum, how long ya gonna be on there'.

Tinker · 22/06/2006 19:27

She was copying the anonymous chat messages that pop up.

southeastastra · 22/06/2006 19:31

yes watch them! also ds got his name hijacked on runescape. it was nothing dodgy but you have to keep eyes open. im posting like mad here cause he's lurking again!

Piffle · 22/06/2006 19:32

I thought the titel read
Do you wish MEN had never been invented, hence my appearance on this thread...

themoon66 · 22/06/2006 19:39

yes southeastastra. DS is lurking here too. I'm off now - he can runescape away for a while.

southeastastra · 22/06/2006 19:41

maybe they will meet in cyberland

2OldSofty · 22/06/2006 19:55

Had experience of nightmare MSN with teens. I think that it's ok in most circumstances with a small group of friends to keep in touch. But with the early/mid teens you have to watch the 'handles' they give themselves as some are downright obscene (education for some of the oldest oldies) and some don't realise what they are actually calling themselves.
It can also develop into a world where they exclude themseleves from the family for hours. Both DH and I were not alone as parents who were very concerned as to who the kids were talking to and where they would end up next - to meet new 'friends' they'd met online. Horrendous.
The age-old problem with the internet is not knowing everyone you are chatting to, and the so-called 16yr old on the other end, may well be the predatory 'old man' waiting for the naive child....(or a predatory 21 year old, as per the news today)You try and get a teen, who thinks you are just being anti-everything,the "WHAT DO YOU KNOW?" attitude, to understand that. It's nigh on impossible.
We hated it for all the trouble, worry and stress it caused and removed it from the home computer.
Good luck to those who still have it.

southeastastra · 22/06/2006 20:00

2oldsofty i am dreading it!

themoon66 · 23/06/2006 09:17

Mine are not allowed computers in their rooms. The computer lives on the dining table of our open plan house, so I can watch the screen everytime I squeeze past to go in the kitchen. And they know that I know as much as they do about computers, and their dad is a computer whizz, so they cannot bamboozle either of us (she hopes).

southeastastra · 23/06/2006 09:37

hello moon, yes mine is slap bang in the middle of the living room, no way would i let him have one in his room! although i would like a laptop!

themoon66 · 23/06/2006 09:48

southeastastra - ours is a laptop.

ernest · 23/06/2006 10:14
