My DS is 14, just gone into year 10. He does ok at school but as with most kids, could do better/needs to work harder. He doesn't get much homework so is usually on his laptop playing games from when he gets in until bedtime. I have asked him to do half an hour revision each night before he goes on the laptop. He's never going to do it off his own back - I am going to have to set him a timetable - and he will do it. My question is - do you think this is reasonable/enough? Should I be more harsh with the time he can spend on his laptop?

Sounds good to me I am going to have to implement the same policy with my two going into year 9 and 10.

Homework first, then dinner then LIMITED games time and log off an HOUR BEFORE bedtime.

If no homework set, then review what they learned in class, esp in subjects they found difficult.

be prepared to lead by example. No games, iPads, texting for you either.

With mine I went with "reasonable and treating like an almost young adult". Agreed and negotiated times and totals, pre-requisites before use. That sort of thing.

On the understanding that if he doesn't behave like an almost young adult capable of sticking to an agreement that he was a part of creating, then "kids' rules" come into play, and the 'puter power cord or the modem will be withheld to enforce the agreement.

So far, so good.

Disclaimer. I have a just 13 yo. 14 yos are as yet unchartered territory for me. You might want to listen to the posters who have BTDT with kids of the same age as yours.
