Teenage drivers - any tips for cheapest car insurance?

18yo ds2 passed his test in May and has just bought a 51 plate Peugeot 106. Quoted £2300 for insurance with Co-op which is the cheapest he's found. Any ideas for a better deal? 19yo ds1 pays £900 for a Fiesta 1.2 with Monarch so it seems that a year makes a huge difference.

I found Direct Line cheapest. Needed to insure 3 DDs,aged 20,17 and 17. Main driver is one of the 17 year olds as eldest at uni. Small engined 2 year old car. Most companies wouldn't insure so many young drivers. Husband added as an additional driver. No excess and no black box. Just over £1700 and I hope it will be a lot cheaper next year!!
Direct Lines also allows additional drivers to earn their own no claims discount if they later get their own car and insure it with them.

There are many different insurers for black box insurance and in our reviews insurethebox comes top, followed by drive like a girl.

Other good companies for young drivers are Marmalade and Co-operative Young Drivers Insurance, however there are new products being launched all the time as all the major insurance companies rush to get in on this form of insurance.

My advice would be that you look at all the present black box providers see which one offers the package that suits you best and give them a try. If it does not suit change it, there are plenty of companies looking for your business.

There is also the alternative of the Roadhawk dash cam that will monitor and record all your journeys in audio and HD which is great for beating crash for cash scams and providing evidence in a no fault accident. Insurance companies are offering substantial discounts for drivers who have one fitted.

Try Kwikfit, and wherever you try, put yourself/any other drivers on the insurance. I'm 19 and have a provisional, I'm policy holder and pay for it all on a Fiat Punto with my mum and OH as named drivers (both use the car with varying frequency), my policy is £800 a year. I'm 3rd party fire and theft as car is only worth £380; just needed something cheap and cheerful to learn in (although it's here to stay now with a DC on the way and no space for car seats in OH's soon-to-be-sold car ).

Mooninleigh94, unfortunately your insurance premium will almost certainly leap up once you have passed your test. Supervised provisional drivers are viewed by insurance companies to be a safer bet than newly qualified drivers. If you are lucky your premium won't increase until after your renewal.

I'll be doing PassPlus to bring it down a little bit more than it would be, but I know it'll jump up. Insurance costs too much anyway
