Jet lagged teenagers !

Aaaargh it has been bad enough getting my kids out of bed before noon all summer, but we have just come back from the USA and they are 5 hours out of sync with British Summer Time.

Last night we had a huge full moon so no one was remotely sleepy until 2am.

DS 13 has walked zombie like from bed, eaten a bowl of cereal, had a shower ( hooray) and immediately fallen asleep on the sofa.

Help, how do I get them UP and MOVING and reset their body clocks ?

I wouldn't fret about it - it's the holidays!

My 2 are also out of sync due to a night flight and then DS "slept" over at his mates last night. I'm making the most of the peace and quiet!

OP, you just (just!) have to get them up at a reasonable time and then theoretically they will be suitably tired by the evening to go to bed. There is no easy answer - you just have to stick it out and put up with the tiredness and gradually the body clock will reset. They need activities to do during the day hours otherwise they will go to sleep. So get them to come food shopping with you, help with unpacking, gardening, literally anything to stay awake. If they wake up in the night, which is likely as their body clocks are all out, encourage them to read until they feel sleepy - no computer games or tv as this wakes them up too much.

I have read that it takes a day for every hour of time difference but in my experience the 5 hours difference from the US takes a good week to get over. We go to the US most years and it has never got any easier to get over.

Good luck - hope that helps.

The older one is cheerfully sorting out her room but DS absolutely refuses to wake up and just rolls his eyeballs in a sort of coma then goes back to sleep. It's going to be a tough night......

Always takes me (us) a week to adjust each way.

See if you can get them into bright light in the day & keep things dark when it should be night. Not much else you can do.

Is there a difference between jet-lagged and non jet-lagged teenagers?
