Teenage girls and weight

my dd was diagnosed with anorexia on Friday, she is only 12 but it was shocking hearing her talk to the dr. about what she thought about her weight and why she was dieting ect.
But what also really shocked me was how common the dr. said this thing was, one of the figures he gave me was that 67% of teenage girls in London go through an eating disorder, low self esteem or depression between 12 and 19. This really shocked me and I just think that it is so wrong that so many girls are unhappy about their bodies but feel so strongly about changing the way they look.
Sorry, just wanted to get my point across, but don't you feel the same?? X

Has she recently started periods or started to develop 'curves' this could be a factor in her wanting some 'control' over her body.
I was an anorexic teen, nothing my mum could say would make me eat. I was a bit older than your DD tho. I think engaging her in the choosing food process might help, if she thinks she is selecting a 'healthier' meal then this might help with the control as she will feel like she has a say. healthy snacks, yoghurt, fruit might encourage her.
Family meals etc were the worst, I couldn't bear to eat in front of anyone. I would eat in my room.

I do recall a project helped me, I redesigned and decorated my room, it gave me something to focus on, something entirely mine that I had control over.

I am still a control freak now, just in different ways. Smile

OP, I posted on your earlier thread I think. I am sorry to hear of the diagnosis, but it is definitely good that you know what you're dealing with now.

Please have a look at the Around the Dinner Table forum (sorry I can't post links but google it). They use the Maudsley method (of refeeding), which is very successful, it is where the parents take complete control. As your daughter is so young, and hopefully you have caught it early, I hope she will get better very soon.
