11 year old dsd having a key?

DP's daughter has just started senior school. The She's asked if she can have a key to our house so that she can get the bus here after school some days.

I personally think she's a little bit too young.... My dd has a key but she's almost 15.

Any thoughts?

Mine have all had keys since they were 9, the age when they started walking home from school alone. Usually one of us is in, but there are odd occasions when they are needed.
I think you are being a bit U.

Sorry, read whole thread now and see you know that!
I quite fancy one of those key safe things actually, my lot don't so much lose their keys as forget to take them to school with them.

Probably to the disapproval and shock of many, I always let myself into the house from age 7, having walked home from school. I had a lovely half an hour on my own until my Mum came in.

The thing to think about with step kids, is that will her other parent abuse it? There have been cases of parents using their kids key to go nosying around the other parents house when they know they are out. Shock

Year 7 is not too young at all though, but I would only give her one if she actually needs it. Will you always be home when she comes to yours? If so, she doesn't need a key. If you might be out, then a key seems a sensible idea.

I had a key and was responsible for letting me and my younger sister in from age 8. We had about 1.5 hours until mum got home. I know what we got up to and DS1 (yr7) doesn't have a key Grin

That said he doesn't need one atm because I'm always home before his long bus ride home. If it was necessary I think I'd let him, although he would need some practice actually opening the door!

I must have missed a trick then nocomparison because I didn't do anything untoward. I just used to read or potter. No telly really in those days at that time of day.

I think we was because we were together fluff- we put each other up to things...Mum walked in once just as there was an explosion in the kitchen Shock
