Assassin's Creed - the ratings system has changed

DS1 loves assassin's creed. He is 13.6 and has played through them all. He isn't especially a gamer otherwise, only plays when he has friends round. I have watched them, they aren't too bad. They are third person and whilst you do have to swing at people a lot with your sword, the level of violence is acceptable to me. There is no really bad language and no sex, though it is strongly hinted at once. They have always been given a 15 cert by the bbfc and they all say 15 on the box.

The new game is out in a few weeks and the ratings system has changed. All games will now be rated by pegi not by the bbfc. According to their website, pegi has given all the old assassin's creed games an 18 rating and will give this the same. (There is only one pegi rating on all the boxes, discs or leaflets we have - on one of the discs.) We have a blanket ban on 18 cert games. I decide with DS whether we think 15s are ok or not, hence we have no COD in the house.

What do I do here???

Oo, tricky one. Thanks for the heads-up. DS1 is 17.5 now, and I have no problem with him playing/watching 18s any more, but this would have caused major problems in our house a couple of years ago. If this had happened then, I would probably have borrowed the new game from someone and watched/played a bit of it to see whether I was happy... The 'blanket ban' isn't going to work any more, because it makes no sense to ban games he will already have played Confused...

the reason that they are 18s now us because there is some nudity in them and women dressed provocativly. the bbfc didn't think that it required a 18 as it is mild but PEGI i more strict.

PretzelTime · 17/09/2012 17:05

Really? Did it get a higher rating because of a little nudity?

The most problematic content in the game is that you are an assassin going around murdering people. The graphics are quite realistic. It's not a crazy gore game though. But you do murder humans.

PropositionJoe · 17/09/2012 17:40

Oh yes, you definitely murder people. I saw the saucy bit in the last one, it wasn't that bad.

Dh has played all of the assassins creed games and I don't think they are bad enough to need an 18 rating. I don't think you should ban it really but explain why you won't be relaxing your views on other 18 rated games. At his age I'm sure he will understand and if he's not much of a gamer otherwise he probably won't care.

KentuckyFriedChildren · 17/09/2012 18:20

Oh and there is swearing in it but its all in Italian :o

PropositionJoe · 17/09/2012 19:44

Yes I know Grin - the only one we understand is merde which I assume is the same as the french

Assassins creed is a pretty tame game, I mean it's got swordfighting and such, but so has Peter Pan. There's not any gore or anything and it's firmly in its historical context. Much worse things will be taught in history classes at school. Most unsheltered 14 year old teenage lads aren't really going to have a problem with such video games.

Plus its actually a good educational tool having real life historical figures and historical facts, with a well recreated 14th century Florence.

DS (15) got one of the Assassins creed games for Christmas (we have the xbox downstairs over the Christmas holidays to encourage sociability) and MIL was not impressed by the saucy bit Blush
