Is it just me or are teenagers (mainly boys) really really irritating at not responding to invites?

DS has invited 11 pple, so 12 including him, to a pub/Indian restaurant in the next village. 7 people, actually 6, because he's 1, have bothered to respond.

I have taken a punt on 10 turning up and paid for a set meal for 10 and stuck another £150 behind the bar.

So roll up, place your bets; will there just be the 7 of them, or will the other 5 turn up without RSVP ing?

I think 3 of the 5 will turn up!

Great idea for an 18th by the way!!

mumblechum1 · 31/08/2012 17:15

Ok, Blackberry. I'll write on your betting slip and stick it in my hatband.

Or something Smile

My guess is all of them. If you are paying and there' money behind bar. 18 yr old lads do not normally turn down free food - ESP Indian!

However - we asked DS if he wanted us to do exactly same as this for his 18th. He couldn't even be arsed to invite anyone, so it was a non starter.

Teenage boys are a strange species.

mumblechum1 · 31/08/2012 19:52

They are indeed awbless. DS not particularly concerned at the lack of RSVPs, as his closest friends are coming, so I don't really know why I'm stressing about it.

OP posts:
awbless · 31/08/2012 19:57

Well I feel sure from what you say that your DS won't be stressing! my DS hasn't got a stressful bone in his body. Quite often I wonder "why do I bother" lol

mumblechum1 · 31/08/2012 20:01

Smile. He just said if there are 3 empty seats, they'll pick up some girls in the bar. Ha bloody har.

Mumble, did he use Facebook for his invitations?
According to my DD (though she's just coming up for 16) NOBODY phones. She doesn't even phone her BF (who's just turned 18).
When is he having his indian? Will some of his mates be going off to uni? I'm not sure when the uni 's term times start - third week of sept?

mumblechum1 · 01/09/2012 02:18

Choco, it's tonight (1st Sept). They're all going into yr13 next week. It is on FB, and 1 of the AWOLs have said "maybe", the others haven't answered at all. Hmm

SkipTheLightFanjango · 01/09/2012 02:24

15..a few "chancers" will appear! Thank god it's not a house party..put that on FB and see how many you get then Grin

chocoluvva · 01/09/2012 08:36

That happened with DD's BF's facebook event invitations for his 18th too. IMO it's really bad form of the invitees, especially when it's a booked event at a public venue. In his case quite a few people were going to be away - but they didn't bother to reply. (In the end he cancelled his event!!!!:(!))
More to the point, if more than 10 show up this evening could you ask for their costs for the meal to come out of the bar fund maybe and give your DS some cash to have in his pocket?
Hope your DS has a great evening.

ToothbrushThief · 01/09/2012 09:05

This is teens all over... depends if they get a better offer basically! Hope your DS has a lovely time

mumblechum1 · 01/09/2012 09:27

choco, yes, that's what I'll do. If only the seven who've replied turn up, that will be fine as they're all pretty close friends, but if a couple of them drop out at the last minute it will be a bit of a dull do!

I hope 2 or 3 more do show up, 10 is a good number for a meal/pub imo.

I've seen those threads on other topics where parents of small children don't respond to invitations, or just don't turn up and the poor little party girl is left all alone asking when everyone is coming.

Yes it's normal. Not right, but normal for teenage boys. We had exactly the same for DS1s 16th birthday which was a house party. I didn't know whether to cater for 10 or 25.

It's the younger generation [grumpy old woman].

Happy birthday to mumbleboy anyway.

mumblechum1 · 01/09/2012 10:08

Thanks SS. So how many did turn up to your DS1s 16th in the end?

OP posts:
cheeseandwino · 01/09/2012 10:34

My ds1 celebrated his 18th last month. I said he could invite 15 friends around and I would supply food (chilli, fajitas, dips, crisps etc) and booze. He sent out a fb invite but only 7 replied, so he decided to send out another 8 invites....and yes, you've guessed it, 23 turned up! :-)

mumblechum1 · 01/09/2012 12:25

Arf Cheese! DS has just got a text from one more to say he's coming, so it's looking like 8 definites now. Smile

OP posts:
SecretSquirrels · 01/09/2012 12:54

It was about 12. Not quite enough to make a party go with a buzz.

chocoluvva · 01/09/2012 13:23

Eight would be fine for a meal and drinks I would think. (Quite a good number).
Back in my day......there would have been no question of not going. But I think we just didn't have as many trips, meals, parties etc. And my mum always took the line of, "You OUGHT to go if you've been invited". (I was ALWAYS desperate to go anyway)!
It's a shame that things have changed in that respect isn't it? I offered to let DD have a party for her 16th and I'm sure she would secretly love to, but she just isn't confident enough and thinks the house is too small :( Although :0 for not having a houseful of teens to worry about !

LadyHortensiaBloom · 02/09/2012 08:42

So how many turned up mumble chum?! Did your DS have a good evening?

mumblechum1 · 02/09/2012 15:23

10 turned up, which was great as I'd paid for the set meal for 10. They all said, apparently, that it was a really fun night and thank you (via ds) for everythign.

DS said the food was really really nice and they appreciated the free bar, so all in all a big success! The pub didn't close till 1am, so they had a proper night of it.

thank god. That will be the last party I organise at least until he's 21.

OP posts:
chocoluvva · 02/09/2012 16:36

Yay! It all worked out perfectly.
They sound like a really nice bunch of lads.

LadyHortensiaBloom · 02/09/2012 17:37

Excellent! I want a curry now though Envy

awbless · 02/09/2012 20:29

Well done mumblechum.

it's bloody fantastic when all that party carry on is over -and they sort their own 'celebrations' out.
