Dd, 13, has recently read the Fallen novels, Torn by Cat Clarke, the Luxe novels and The Toymaker.

She is quite into vampires, angels and demons, as well as horror, comedy, diary type books, anything based around the Victorian era and is looking for recommendations on books to read next.

She prefers not to read war based books, but is open to pretty much anything else.

If your dc's have read anything recently that they could recommend, we'd be really grateful :)

Has she read Artemis Fowl? I bought this for my 8 year old without knowing anything about it and thought I'd take a quick look before I handed it over. It was completely unsuitable for her (much too grown up) but I was up till 2am, totally gripped. I would have thought it would be great for a 13 year old.

There's lemony snicket a series of unfortunate events? Very pg and really intresting, I'm 14 and read them myself, its a 13 book series and its about 3 orpans who go from relative to relative with unfortunate but exciting things happening to them along the way

DS2 (11) has just been given a book called Wereworld by Curtis Jobling. He has pronounced it "very good".

He was given it by the author and I made him start it out of politeness. He has carried on with it so it must be good!

My 14 yr old is currently loving the cherub series by Robert Muchamore

SoupDragon · 05/08/2012 02:31

How could I have forgotten Cherub?! Both my DSs devoured them, as did a friend's DD.

Agree with neolara Artemis Fowl series - funny and gripping, loved by DS and parents! Can't agree on Lemony Snicket - DS hated them but know many others love them.

His dark materials and the other Philip Pullman books (ruby in the smoker, the firework makers daughter etc).

Sabriel, Lirael, Abhorsen- this trilogy is absolutely incredible fantasy! I can't emphasise how much it captures the imagination.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions! I've shown dd and she's written them down and will work her way through the list :)

She has a kindle, so will probably download some too. I can't believe I didn't think of doing that actually - but I won't use the kindle, love holding a proper book, turning proper pages and the smell of a new book is amazing!

Thanks again all

No one has yet mentioned Hunger Games - or has every teenager already read it? It is really very good. My 13yr od DD devoured all 3 booked in about 3 days (then came up for air!)
