Went out today to buy a pair of shorts and pyjamas for DS aged 13 (to supplement holiday wear).

Went to two Tescos, Sainsburys and Next.

Absolutely nothing for boys beyond the age of 12.

I can only assume that lads continue to wear clothes bought for them when they were 12 until they are about 17 and start to fit adult clothes. This would explain all the 'cropped' trousers and tee shirts I see!

It would also explain the obsession with xbox etc. They need something to do until they can find clothes that fit and they can go out into the world again!

I seem to remember using TKMaxx a lot at this age

roisin · 31/07/2012 22:04

Oh yes, definitely. ds2 is 13 and whilst he's quite tall he is still far too little for "small mens", but many shops seem to have nothing whatsoever for this age/size.

fridayfreedom · 31/07/2012 22:04

same problem here, 13 year old skinny boy but quite tall...nightmare!!
M&S do some clothes upto 14, TKMaxx have some stuff,
DS lives in Wierdfish Tshirts in the sale!!

GnocchiNineDoors · 31/07/2012 22:04

Try H&M and River Island.

SparklingGoldMedals · 31/07/2012 22:08

I feel your pain. DS1 (13) has just found out he fits into Top Man's size XS but they are so expensive and not great quality. He also fits into a Primark S.

BUT I couldn't find a pair of pyjamas anywhere to fit him so ended up buying him shorts and T shirt. He didn't really want Angry Birds or Mario on them.

Also Next range goes from 3-16 years, Why would a 16 year old boy want to wear the same t-shirt as a 3 year old?

landofsoapandglory · 31/07/2012 22:11

Next go up to age 16, but rarely have it in the stores, you usually have to order it and either pay for it tobe delivered to your home lot have it delivered to store.

My 2 boys have been wearing men's clothes for absolute years now, definitely since they were 13!

BackforGood · 31/07/2012 22:14

I remember this problem. You can't get choice of boys clothes for aged 12 + until they can fit into mens sizes. No idea why. Yup, that's why they have to go out and about in oversized hoodies and cropped trousers. Tis a nightmare to get anything relatively smart.

GnomeDePlume · 31/07/2012 22:18

Unfortunately the shops I mentioned were all that were within a convenient half hour drive of us.

My DS is also tall but quite skinny. XS men's tee-shirts will fit DS but he is really skinny round the middle so adult size shorts would swamp him or fall off.

DS1 (13) needs a dressing gown. I bet that will be difficult.

SparklingGoldMedals · 31/07/2012 22:20

Ds1 is the same Gnome he is so skinny. Everything needs a belt, and you can't get a belt to fit him either unless you want cartoon characters on it.

TheCrackFox · 31/07/2012 22:21

I have a very tall 11 yr old and it is starting to become a nightmare clothes wise. We can still get a few bits and bobs from H & M.

Hassled · 31/07/2012 22:22

It is a bloody nightmare age to shop for. H&M are good - go up to age 14 and have the holy grail of adjustable waists. Next online not bad but the shops themselves are shit re stock for that age. And yes, TopMan small is very small and will do but it's stupidly expensive for clothes that won't fit in 6 months.

wigglybeezer · 31/07/2012 22:22

Know what you mean Gnome, today ds1 (14) was wearing some old age 11 jeans and a small mans tshirt from primark!

landofsoapandglory · 31/07/2012 22:24

Some Men's shops do 26" waist, I am frantically trying to think which ones it is.
Most of them start at 28. Primark is good if you can get to one, they start at 28 I think, but they are cut small they are smaller than that IYSWIM.

SparklingGoldMedals · 31/07/2012 22:26

How can Top Man sell T-Shirts that appear to be the same as Primark but for 18 quid?

amck5700 · 31/07/2012 22:28

I tend to stick with Next and H&M online - GAP do some 13+ stuff online too. Laredoute are pretty good for teenagers but again you have to order and have it delivered. My just turned 12 year old fits most small mans clothes now (he's 5 4" but not hit puberty yet!) but I grudge paying an adult price for a 12 year old.....also grudge having to buy mens shoes etc with no tax discount as well.

Zippylovesgeorge · 01/08/2012 17:04

Primark is the answer - they do some of their trousers/shorts at 26" waist - my skinny 14 year old fits their 28" long trousers perfectly :)

T-shirts are the best - wash brilliantly and last as long as the expensive topman ones.

TopMan/Burtons do good hoodies - and excellent sales ;)

SynchronisedSquirrels · 01/08/2012 17:19

Mine are both very tall and were both in small mens by aged 12, but I had that problem from aged 10 to 12 when they were too big for anything in children's ranges.
Really annoying when adult clothes are so much more expensive. Both in adult shoes by 10 years old as well.
DS1 now 16 and 6'2" but still only 28 waist which isn't always available.

amck5700 · 01/08/2012 17:40

I'm dreading the coming years as both my boys are predicted to be in the 6 4" to 6 6" range and their dad takes size 12 shoes :(

Pagwatch · 01/08/2012 17:48

I end up in selfridges with ds2. It is a pain and it is frisking expensive but I know I will get stuff that fits him (he is 15 and skinny) and he can try stuff on in a big changing room which is quiet.
Tommy hillfiger is especially good for his shape.

Theas18 · 01/08/2012 17:50

Primary and a lot of trying on!
Their sizes are pretty random but usually very skimpily cut so good for skinny teens.

Theas18 · 01/08/2012 17:50

Primark damn auto correct !

TwoStepsBack · 01/08/2012 17:54

I remember going through this with both DS. I really don't understand why our huge NEXT store cannot stock teenage boys clothes.

They also hated anything with a sports logo so that made it even more difficult.

I think we managed with Top Man XXS and the odd piece from in Debenhams.

Meglet · 01/08/2012 17:58

DS is only 5 but now I've read this I've realised you're all right, there's currently nothing for teenager boys Confused. It's been bad enough making the leap from toddler to little boy clothes.

WerthersUnOriginal · 01/08/2012 18:13

Very annoying I agree. My ds is 10 but as tall as most 13 yr olds so we're well into this problem. La Redoute are quite good. I've got him nice skinny jeans and other nice clothes from there.
