A bit of good news for a change about my DS

I got my effing useless DS some work experience at a bank through a friend of a friend near Liverpool St last week. This meant him getting up early and two trains into the City. I spent £100 on the train ticket and was worried he would go once and then not bother to get out of bed the rest of the week.

Anyway, the news I got back was wonderful. He worked in various different departments, mixed well, was interested and spoke some Japanese to the Japanese staff who were there. They said they had never had a westerner (if I am allowed to use that word) speak Japanese at their Japanese bank. DS said he was paraded around the office to show off his Japanese skills!

So praise the Lord all that nagging was worth it in the end. Before he left the bank yesterday I texted him to say go and say thankyou and shake the hands of everyone who had helped him and he said he had already done it!!!!

Anyway, he is home again and back to his normal grouchy self. At least I know there is a 'real boy' hiding in there somewhere.

Fantastic. Goes to show that sometimes they are different people away from us.

Brill. How did the Japanese thing come about - did you live there or did he study it at Uni? (Sorry if this has already been explained elsewhere)

Good for him! (and you of course Grin) You must be so proud of him - and rightly so - and thanks for the glimmer of hope that my DS (14) will eventually turn out the same when he gets through this current stage ...

He is 17, just finished year 12. Does Japanese at school and really enjoying it. Back to his grumpy old self today.

Is this work experience, SecondhandRose - ie unpaid? Got me thinking about my Dss - 20 and 16 - currently languishing at home over the Summer while I, sadly, have to work ft. Few jobs round here (they have tried - up to a point) but banks and building societies aplenty which I think would afford excellent experience.

Thinking, too, that work experience or voluntary work would be preferable to being tethered to computers all day (at least in the case of one DS). However, on the bright side, they are up for sorting our garden out for reasonable remuneration from me.

Anyway, good news about your DS. Delighted it went well - is he going back?

Oh thats lovely. It must have made you beam!

What a sweet (miserable) boy you have! Smile

Ive got all this to come!

Yes, it was just work experience to see what it is like working in a bank. He had to sign a confidentiality form!

I would suggest if you know anyone who works in an industry your child might be interested in get talking to them about work experience.

He is quite affable this afternoon, stuffing his face with pizza and watching the tennis.
