Just returned from Y8 parents evening where my daughter, who shone last year in Yr 7 at all subjects, has apparently this academic year missed h/w, not finished class work, and generally in half of her subjects shown apathy and won't shut up in lessons. I was horrified as this is the first I have heard of it all year (only a few weeks left until the end of the year too).

Subjects she loves are ones she shines in, but she feels that those that are dull and also ones that she won't pursue at GCSE are not worth the effort - how can I get her back on track without grounding/shouting/threats... do I have to sit over her and check her homework daily until she starts to mend her ways?

Tried a bit of a guilt trip tonight, but I need help in ideas to motivate her. Any one got any good ones? Thanks

I would go back to when she was in primary and do homework checks I had to do this with dd2 last year when she was 13 weirdly enough . Also i would tell her you will be checking with school every week to see how she is behaving doesnt sound like shes really badly behaved , I am in scotland and unsure so is she in gcse year in september has she chosen her options ? she is a star in her classes she likes , so try and get her to stay quiet and keep her head down there isnt long to go ,

I'd be having a word with the school .
Asking why no earlier communication with you and what can be put in place for next year to keep you informed and daughter motivated .
No doubt you'll have to be incredibly persistent to get co operation from school .

Actually I think if ever there was a time for combination of grounding/threats this is it. Followed by a large bribe reward payable if all targets met in Y9.
Year 8 is notorious for this and there is time to pull back in year nine.
Agree with gingerroots the school should have let you know before. Our school does a report every term, not huge detail but enough to see whether they are on track.
I would talk to her tutor and ask him to keep tabs with other subject teachers and talk to you at least every half term.
