My dd loves it - she's going to the expo in London this month.

Just wondering if anyones kids are into similar things and could recommend books, DVDs or anything else.

Thanks :)

My dd 14 is as well. We are probably going to the expo as well. DD doesnt do a lot of drawing but more into the films and books ie studio ghibli, fruits basket, kingdom hearts, umbrella academy.

bruffin · 06/05/2012 11:05

Is your DD going in costume, as i just realised i said would help dd with a costume and will run out of time

mumofjust1 · 06/05/2012 11:11

Hi Bruffin!

Dd is driving me crazy with expo talk! She's so excited as she's never been before.

She is going in costume - thankfully all sorted. What is your dd going as?

DSS used to be in to this quite a lot, and used to watch all the episodes online all seven million of them He is still interested in it now, which I find at bit Hmm as he is now 20 and serving in the Navy! He used to go out with a very 'serious' girl when they were about 14, and they were going to move to Japan together to draw cartoons Grin. She dumped him when she realised he wasn't as serious about it as she was!

He was also very interested in the, er, more 'adult' versions and wasn't very good at hiding his tracks on my laptop

FallenCaryatid · 06/05/2012 11:23

Mine is, and is going to the expo in costume along with her mates as she has done for the last 4 years. Your DD will pick up recommendations from her friends, a lot of it is online now.
DS is into manga books but not into the socialising aspects of it IRL.

bruffin · 06/05/2012 11:27

DD wants to go as Kairi from Kingdom hearts, looks simple but I can't find a good pattern as a base.

My friends dd went to japan for her honeymoon so they could go to the studio ghibli studios.

mumofjust1 · 06/05/2012 12:00

Bruffin, are you making her costume?!

bruffin · 06/05/2012 12:13

Yes- well attempting it anyway Grin
I think i have now found the pattern, just need to work out the right material.

My 16 and 14 year old dd's are obsessed with manga/anime all things kawaii.16 year old is also into dressing in gothic lolita outside of school. It started with studio ghibli when they were about seven and then fruits basket a few years later. They were obsessed with DeathNote(the anime, the manga, the rl films and novels - all of it) for a long time but are now into Hetalia and go around talking in the annoying accents the characters use (it is a comedy)- its very popular among their age group. They also like Black Butler and Vampire Knight. They are trying to persuade some friends to do cosplay with not much luck.

My 16 year old has her gcse's so not going to the expo this time - she goes to Hyper japan as well.

FallenCaryatid · 06/05/2012 12:28

Hetalia is surprisingly good at teaching the political relationships between countries. Smile
Brighton is having a Japanese festival at the end of June, it's already looking interesting.

My dd is into death note, black butler etc. This will be her first expo and she will have just turned 13, she's so excited :)

Does anyone know what the expo is like, how much money she will need etc?

Is she going with a group of friends? That's the best way.
Mine takes bottled water and snacks with her, there are food stalls there and the general atmosphere is friendly and non-threatening. It is very big, with a huge range of different interests related, DD and friends split up and kept in touch with mobiles.
Only hassle mine got was coming back on the tube with some football fans, but it was just heckling and the group saw them off with little bother.

FallenCaryatid · 06/05/2012 12:49

Does she have her ticket or is she going to queue?

sashh · 06/05/2012 13:17

A lot of adults are into it. And yes some of it does become sexual. Maybe keep an eye on things.

FallenCaryatid · 06/05/2012 13:36

Yes, there is an adult market, but the boundaries tend to be very clear. I'd always keep an eye on any activity my children were involved in though. Complacency is always a bad thing. Smile

mumofjust1 · 06/05/2012 14:44

Dd is going gothic lolita style. She has a lovely Hellbunny dress :)

She is going with one friend so I've made it clear they must stay together which they are happy to do as they have the same interests.

Thanks for the tip re water and snacks - I'm assuming food and drinks will be expensive?

I'm aware that there is a whole world of adult anime/manga out there and I do keep an eye on what she's reading and watching.

We are in west london and I'm worried about the girls getting there - I'm intending to drive them there and pick them up. Is it accesable by car?

Fallen - she is going to queue. She's only going on the saturday - I thought you could only buy weekend tickets in advance?

FallenCaryatid · 06/05/2012 14:48

Don't know. Have a useful link.

FallenCaryatid · 06/05/2012 14:51

DD and her friends are meeting up from their various locations and unis and have booked a cheap hotel with roomsharing so they can stay over and enjoy the whole thing. Most have booked in advance, some will be paying on the day and meeting up inside.

mumofjust1 · 06/05/2012 14:53

Thanks for the link Fallen :) have had a look and it seems easy enough

It turns out I have it wrong, we are going to this one in July, which is a bit of relief as i have longer to make the costume.

DoesItWearingWellies · 08/05/2012 01:52

My DDs were, DD2 more than DD1 (in fact, DD2 is in the anime/cosplay society at uni) and both have gone the the expo a couple of times. DD2 was also into drawing manga.

Definitely take water and snacks, the food there is expensive, especially when compared to a supermarket sandwich/drink/snack meal deal. From what DDs have told me, there's a lot to look at, a lot to buy (and some of it rather expensive), lots of people taking pictures and lots of people to take pictures of, that it gets rather warm and a tad crowded, plus the queues for tickets can be amazingly long, but it is worth it.

Not sure about car access, my DDs got the train (admittedly DD2 was 14 when she first went and got the train with DD1's 17yo friends, then next year DD1 was 18 and very used to the tube/DLR). I'd definitely check out the website and check what the venue says about getting there.

From what I can remember, they were both into Naruto and Fruits Basket, plus I think DD2 was into Kingdom Hearts, Vampire Knights, Bleach and Death Note, plus many more I can't remember. There was one that was something to do with a high school that had a pair of male, red-head twins in that acted a lot like the Weasley twins both DDs loved. Not sure what it was Confused

marriedinwhite · 13/05/2012 20:39

The queue can be horrific so my advice is get there early. Driving is easy and the parking isn't too expensive either. If I were you, I would park, see them to the queue arrange a collection point for afterwards and head off to do something for two to three hours - not sure where because I have been twice and have gone in with dd. Not too sure about that part of London but may be you can pick up the DLR to somewhere with shops/galleries.

We went to a modern ballet at Sadler's Wells based on Manga and the history was incredibly interesting and deep with it's roots in the horrors of Hiroshima and the transition of Japanese live from a traditional to modern culture.

TinkerSailerSoldierSpy · 14/05/2012 20:46

Shock Sorry to intrude and ask personal questions but is your daughter by any chance called Katherine?

marriedinwhite · 14/05/2012 21:29

Mine isn't Smile
