Teenage DS trying to insure a car!

Any lucky parent out there with any advice on car insurance for an 18 year old.

He's driven on mine as a learner but now is now trying to insure a 10 year old car in his own name.

Cheapest he's found so far is £1500 with a tracker (monitors speed etc) and a curfew (between 11 and 5am).

He really does need a car to get to work. He has to be there for 7am and poor mum and dad would like a lie in.

Is this what it costs now days?

I think it might be. We haven't been able to find anything better ourselves for ds(19) but I will watch this thread with interest!

AkhalTeke · 02/05/2012 17:45

£1500 is very good, I'm afraid. Where from?

gaunyerseljeannie · 02/05/2012 17:46

That is cheap foran 18 year old driver and a 10 year old car, what company?

ShitBallsNassholes · 02/05/2012 17:47

I agree with Akhal, that is very good my lad was paying over £300 a month. It's just over £200 now after his first year.

nagynolonger · 02/05/2012 17:48

He's on his laptop now. That's coop I think.

Watching with interest too.

nagynolonger · 02/05/2012 17:50

My older sons never had a tracker/curfew is that normal now too?

OP posts:
missgrim · 02/05/2012 17:50

make sure he lowers the excess.

missgrim · 02/05/2012 17:51

and plays with the figures, sometimes comprehensive is cheaper than 3rd party.

SodThat · 02/05/2012 17:51

get yourselves on the policy too. With mum and dad on there as well (policy in your ds name) you will save yourselves quite a bit.

The theory is 3 people on a policy, less time for the ds to drive, therefore reducing the chances of a teen claiming.

Fiddle about with the price comparisons adding your names too.

nagynolonger · 02/05/2012 17:54

He's not happy some are £4000+. He's a first year apprentice it's more than half is take home pay.

OP posts:
hathorkicksass · 02/05/2012 17:56

That's a good deal.

DilysPrice · 02/05/2012 17:59

See if putting you on the policy helps, but frankly that's a very competitive price.

missgrim · 02/05/2012 18:00

alternativelyt just put him on yours til he is maybe 19?

memphis83 · 02/05/2012 18:01

Either put yourself on his policy or try a company like Direct Line where named drivers get no claims discount built up and have you as a main driver and him as a named?
My nephew is a mechanic, he is 20 and has an R reg fiesta and and it was £2500, he added his mum and it halved.

lagoonhaze · 02/05/2012 18:02

I'm with co op. Dread to think what insurance will be when ds4 learns! Think that quote is cheap because of the restrictions

nagynolonger · 02/05/2012 18:08

I tried with my insurance but they are not keen on him driving more miles than me so wanted him limited to driving to work 3 days a week!

VickityBoo · 02/05/2012 18:12

I'm not in this position but wondering, with a curfew what happens if he needs to get to a hospital using his car within the curfew time? Just curious.

nagynolonger · 02/05/2012 18:15

Is it just those of us who are blessed with sons! Do girls pay the same......It was a girl racer who crashed into me.

OP posts:
nagynolonger · 02/05/2012 18:16

Not a clue about that Vickity.

Sometimes slightly altering your job description helps too, but keep it accurate and legal. Have a look on the www.moneysavingexpert.com site too, they have a whole section on lowering afar insurance.

Also, one insurer identified, look and see if they are registered on quidco, then you might get some money back

littlemisstax · 02/05/2012 18:17

Have you tried something like the Admiral multi car? We got a hefty discount on both our policies by switching to multicar

Annunziata · 02/05/2012 18:17

It's absolutely shocking. We got a good deal with Direct Line, we saw those tracker things but the fine print said that you had to pay for the tracker yourself, maybe something to check out?

DilysPrice · 02/05/2012 18:18

At the moment girls pay less but any moment now pricing discrimination based on gender will be outlawed so they will both pay the same.

Unfortunately teenaged boys have multi-million pound crashes all the time and that needs to be paid for.
