Teenagers and tax

DS has had two jobs where he has paid full tax on his wages. I assume that he will get his tax back sometime in april, but he does not seem to have been issued with a tax code yet despite working since October.

He needs to find out which tax office his main employers use, then contact the PAYE department there. He'll get a tax code in a couple of weeks and a tax refund through his pay packet.

Thanks
I have found the number of the tax office for his first job which finished in January, so will ask about his tax office when he goes in next for the current job.

Definitely ring them. My DD2 works two weekend jobs and was over taxed until we gave them both companies tax references. Your son should be given a tax code specific to his earnings:)

He won't automatically get the tax back until much much later in the year.

He should phone the self assessment helpline with his NI number and payslips from both jobs in front of him. Explain the situation and ask to split his personal allowance between the jobs. They will also explain how to get the tax back for the tax year just ended.

Thanks everyone
Sorry, need to explain he no longer works at the first job, but there was a cross over in january as he didn't get a wage slip until the end of january but he had already started at his second job.

I spent 40 minutues waiting on the phone yesterday to the tax help line with no response and tried to ring his first tax office which said it was open until 8, but got a message there was no one to answer calls!

He is not in a rush for the money, thankfully he sees it as some sort of savings plan.

Make him do the calls! It's up to him to do this, and they make not take the information from you.

I was wondering about that. He is fairly self sufficient, ie managed to get two jobs with no help.
