We want to add DS1 (18, provisional licence) to our insurance on our battered, old hatchback. Does anyone have any recommendations for a reasonably priced insurer?

Think my BIL & SIL said they used Admiral to add DN's to their insurance and they were reasonably priced. We've got 18 mths before we have this issue.
Was listening to an article on the radio a couple of months ago about a woman who added their DS (18) to their insurance and had a computer gadget fitted to the car engine which monitored the driving. If you drove carefully the premium could be reduced - if you drove eratically, they increased the premium. Gadget was included in cost of insurance and you could go on-line and look at the info recorded. As the family knew who had the car at what time, they could tell who was responsible for any fast acceleration or sudden braking. Sounded like a good system to me and I hope it is available when my DS is 17. I think she said it was done through the Co-op.

Quinn Direct for learners.. by far the cheapest we found (I have an old micra).
Sadly my DS failed his test and we can't afford to reinsure him at all this year:( BUT Quinn were very reasonable compared to the rest!

Just got a quote of £5800 for 17 yo DS for a 996cc car in lowest group insurance. That isn't a typo - I do mean the insurance was more than the damn car. This was the cheapest quote as well, including using a black box for monitoring driving www.mumsnet.com/te/5.gif
Needless to say he's still walking / using bus

marmalade specialise in younger drivers

I second LV. They let us put DS1 on and off the insurance (as a named driver) when it was convenient (e.g. Easter holidays "on", term-time "off"). Saves money
