How much do you spend on your dc clothes?

My ds is almost 16. I just wondered how other parents manage requests for clothes. Do you give a set amount or buy as and when.

Where do you buy clothes from? Is there anywhere I don't know about that might save a bit of money?

I have spent about £200 this half tem on dd 15 on bright jeans, a skirt, a couple of tops from TopShop and a couple of H and M cardis. Oh and school shoes £50.
I hate Primark and have passed my loathing on to her...she doesn't have many clothes, but wears them endlessly eg Jack Wills vests have lasted 3 years and still going strong.
She has 2 pairs of Clarks boots...again has realised they are sturdy, warm and look good....she bought some cheap ones from Shoezone which lasted 6 wears...complete rubbish.

So true Maryz, so true.

I mean covet, don't I? Isn't covert something else entirely? Grin

I think what it boils down to is that whatever sum you come up with has to be some kind of compromise between how well you want them to be dressed, what the norm is for their particular peer group and how much can afford. We live in a not particularly affluent area, so dd has not been fed with very high expectations from her friends, we have a modest income so there is only so much available for clothes and I also have a feeling that if your child is likely to go onto university having acquired expensive tastes isn't necessarily doing them a favour.

I don't have a set amount. My ds went to college last sept I spent about £200 on some new clothes (this included stationery and college bag). His birthday is mid October so he mainly got money so bought new stuff for himself. Then Christmas money again so he bought what he wanted. I bribed him to spend the day with us (me and dd 10) with the promise of new jeans yesterday. Spent £56 on him in topshop would have been less I he'd remembered his student card!

My dd wears clothes from mainly jack wills and hollister. I buy from the jw outlet and the sale. My dh went to the states and came back with a huge bag of hollister stuff at a fraction of the price that we pay here.

Since Xmas I think I've spent approx £280. But ths should last her for months.

My kids (12 and 13) get a clothing allowance that is for everything except school uniform, necessary practical shoes/footwear, and practical coats. We didn't know how much to give them, so started with a one-off £30 then £10 a month, to be reviewed if this wasn't enough. We started this in the summer and they've only spent about half of it Shock. They aren't interested in brands though [lucky] and I have to march them to the shops sometimes when their clothes are falling apart.

beckyboo232 · 20/02/2012 16:17

My 14 year old gets 40£a month for all her clothes except school stuff and a coat. She usually saves to buy jack wills something or other, I may treat her if I see something on sale but otherwise that's it

I buy underwear, pyjamas, shoes and special occasion clothes (weddings, etc), they also get an outfit at Christmas and for birthdays. Anything else they want, they buy with their allowance. DS (13) shops almost exclusively at H&M with his own money. DD (nearly 11) likes New Look.

AllPastYears · 20/02/2012 18:48

Oh yes, forgot underwear... I don't expect my kids to buy their own underwear out of their £10 Grin. I feel mean compared to the allowances some of your kids get, but then they don't even spend their meagre sum Grin.

ok i have set rules that i will not buy designer/brand clothes as a given my dds dont get PB or whatever if they want things like that they pay for themselves, i would say i spend as they need so they might not need clothes for a few months then i can spend getting clothes updated , so last month i spent £50 on dd2 but she may not need or want clothes for a while , i pick bits up i think they will like from primark or H n M

nowittynamehere · 21/02/2012 09:59

I will buy at christmas though dd2 got converse dd1 likes Dcs or bandtype clothes Famous stars and straps that kinda things so will buy those but not week to week iyswim , she is working pt so she buys alot of her own clothes now ,
