Where do you stand when it comes to the programme Skins?

Personally, I don't see the problem with it, but when a friend asked my if my DTS (just 16) watched it and I said yes, she was shocked. Apparently her DCs (14 and 16) aren't allowed to watch it but how can she enforce that rule with laptops and 4OD and everything? And do you think 16 is too young to be watching a programme like that (I didn't share with my friend that my DCs have watched it for a couple of years now)?

mine watch it, have done for a while .. youngest is just turned 16, i actually watched it for the first time the other day, i didnt see anything wrong with it :)

purits · 22/01/2012 11:36

I haven't watched it in a while because it is pants and sensationalist. I was worried about DS watching it and discussed it with him. I needed have worried: he saw through it too.
He much prefered The Inbetweeners: that is cringeingly all-too-believable. Blush and Grin

GraduallyGoingInsane · 22/01/2012 12:36

DD1 (15) watches it.

I don't have a big problem with it actually - largely because in Skins things go wrong. I'd rather they watched a programme like that where they take drugs and end up in a difficult situation and get hurt. Or drink, and get drunk, and are sick, and look silly. I prefer that the consequences are displayed, rather than programmes where it glosses over the risky behaviour.

I wouldn't let DD3 (11) and DD4 (9) watch it, because they are too young and I'd like to think that the dangerous 'teenage' behaviour wouldn't cross their minds.

DD2 (13) doesn't watch it, but if she wanted to, I'd be ok with that.

Cromwell44 · 22/01/2012 20:52

I watch it with my DD (17), mainly to criticise the realism and for us to bond over agreeing and disapproving over various bits of the story. Agree with purits, I think most teenagers see it as totally unbelievable but a good watch. The equivalent of Desperate Housewives for teens.

BerniW · 23/01/2012 16:32

Yep my ds2 (16) loves it. I can't bring myself to watch it with him and "bond" - it's too awful. However, I have forced myself to suffer TOWIE to try to connect with him. That's a couple of hours of my life I'll never get back again......!

accidentprawn · 23/01/2012 16:36

my dd (12) doesnt watch it. i wont let her watch it, she is in bed when it is on - 10:00 she is just going to bed.
some E4 programms i am fine with but skins, playing it straight and desprate housewives i don`t want her to watch.
she does get looked at at school by people when they go oh did you watch xyz.

we don`t watch eastenders or corrie here either...

mrsjay · 23/01/2012 17:42

I watched the first series and i wasnt 16 Grin havnt watched since i think my dd watches is but shes 18 i dont see any problem with a 16 yr old watching it ,

OneHandFlapping · 23/01/2012 17:47

16 and over in our house. It glorifies casual sex, drug taking and drinking too much.

Dh and I watch it. The first two series, with the first cast, were brilliantly written, with excellent characters. The third and fourth were a pale shadow of theearlier ones, and we gave up on the fifth. Now it is just sensationalist crap.

MadDash · 23/01/2012 19:45

Nothing wrong with it in my view, it's so unbelievable and things go wrong for the characters so much I don't think it exactly 'glorifies' drug taking. I think 13 upwards would be my view; at secondary school they're going to be exposed to similar language/behaviour anyway.

Confuzzled128 · 23/01/2012 20:10

First two seasons where great... s'all gone down hill from there. And I'm 18. I'd probably say that 13+ would be okay to watch it and understand that it's fiction. However, a better TV show would be inbetweeners, tamer and funny.

NomDePrune · 24/01/2012 11:38

took my DD and 2 friends to audition for series 3 (I think it was) ... along with several hundred other hopefuls.
They had to prove they were UNDER 18 even to get registered to audition. So I reckon I would let a y11 watch it, not sure about y9/10 though. But is it a deterrent or a 'how-to'?

OneHandFlapping · 24/01/2012 14:02

NomdePrune, they had to prove they were under 18 to audition? Some of the scenes were pretty graphic. I hate to think of children having to act those.

NomDePrune · 24/01/2012 17:55

yes, onehand, under 18. Had to take birth certificate ("my baby!")
I kind of knew she wouldn't get a part, so it was a good audition experience I suppose.

blameitonthecaffeine · 27/01/2012 21:28

I wouldn't let mine watch it but the oldest is only 13. I'll admit to being a bit of a tv nazi though
