DD doesn't want to do PE when she has her period

A few months ago, DD's 'pad' leaked during PE, and she got blood all over her shorts. Since then, she has pleaded with me to write her a sick note to get her out of PE when she has her period. She has been so upset, almost hysterical, that I have reluctantly done so for the last 2 months, making up different excuses (pulled a muscle/ recovering from a bad cold), but I can't really keep doing this. So, I wondered whether anyone had experienced this, and had any advice.
TIA

using 2 pads - the second pad is basically to mop up leaks ,so two next to eachother or larger one underneath narrower one .
But I'm old and harking back to dark old days .
Have even resorted to using son's nappies at times ....

She should learn to deal with her periods instead of treating them as an illness. She is going to have them for a very long time.

poor girl must be mortifyed I would have a word with her P e teacher tell them whats going on maybe let her have a few p e lessons off and get her a pair of tracksuit bottoms , she cant stay of P E forever but i can see why she is so upset ,

I know how bad it can be! I suffered terribly from Period Pain and so does my daughter! That has happened to MB Before and she was refusing to go back to that PE lesson because everyone saw her period leak on her gym leggings. MB suffers from heavy periods and terrible pain. I gave her a pack of Feminax Express Tablets and Paracetamol And Sent Her Off To School. She still refused to go so I had a word with her teacher who was so great about it and she let her Sit Out sometimes but not all the time because obviously her PE Teacher has periods/Friends have periods! So I bought her a Menstrual Cup (Lily Cup Compact Size A) which changed her life! They made her periods lighter and easier. Now she can go to PE and not miss learning what she is doing so she can pass her GCSE in PE.

Or what I did when I was in High School (Year 10) Was Go To PE and get change and warm up then when I still felt terrible I went up to my PE Teacher (Male for this lesson) and said that I didn't feel well and wanted to sit out for a bit! He said "NO WAY! WHY SHOULD I LET YOU SIT OUT?" So I replied back [Away From Everyone Else] and said , "I'm On My Period!!" He then said . "Okay, You Can Sit Out!"

What I'm Trying To Get At Is : She Can Tell Him/Her If She's Tried And Still Can't Do It/Won't Do It Then She Can Ask To Sit Out And They Should Say yes Because At Least Shes Had A Go At It !!!!

Diary Doll pants are really good you wear them with pads etc as normal but they have an invisible section in which makes them leak proof . John Lewis did them Boots do them - they not cheap between 9 and 15 quid but my daughter feels much more confident now .

seventhgonickname · 25/01/2017 17:05

My dd has used tampons since she was 11 as she was then able to go swimming also for times when she was sitting for a long time to avoid flooding. She doesn't use them all the time but they gave her confidence. She found those with applicators easier to start with and used only small ones.

I don't think it's unreasonable during a heavy period to not want to be doing gymnastics, running, bouncing around or whatever.

Most adult women (apart from any work duties relating to exercise) have the choice not to go to the gym or do anything too physical for a day or two during a particularly heavy flow.

I do think she should be encouraged to power through though, and show that it isn't impossible, suggest trying tampons, thicker pads etc.

cansu · 29/01/2017 08:33

Ibuprofen seems to lessen flow so taking this during period should help. What aboyt some of the new period knickers? She could wear these over the top of normal ones to double up. I would also recommend she try tampons too. Before I discovered ibuprofen I used to need both tampax and s heavy duty pad.

cansu · 29/01/2017 08:36

If you do go to see pe teacher ask if she can go and change or check pad frequently as that will reassure her she is ok.

HappyJustToBe · 29/01/2017 08:39

Facebook keeps showing me an advert for Thinx which are pants that absorb the blood and can be used alone or with other sanitary products. I've been thinking they may be worth a try for the bad days.

Fallonjamie · 29/01/2017 08:40

Five years on I think the OP has probably sorted it.

Oops! Missed that when it came up in active.

liveoutloud · 24/02/2017 22:47

We were allowed to be excused from PE once a month when I was a young girl. When did this change?
BTW I am surprised at how many young girls use tampons. My DD only uses pads and I started using tampons when I was 30-ish.

GodWork · 24/02/2017 22:59

Unbelievably unsympathetic posts on here. My DD had problems and couldn't use tampons for years. Eventually after she had a look with a mirror she realised she had a problem. A septate hymen and vagina in fact. No, she couldn't just use a tampon. Yes she did need surgery.

How about some genuine empathy rather than the PE mistress belt up refrain. It isn't always in the mind.

wrenika · 03/03/2017 14:16

Thinx pants would be worth a go. I use them with a pad, just as a backup! They can absorb varying amounts - I wear the hip hugger ones and they absorb up to 2 tampons' worth. They absolutely saved my life when my flow turned waterfall on me during a meeting at work - bled right through the pad but the thinx absorbed what would have been an embarrassing leakage. I also use them at night because I find it pads uncomfortable to sleep in and I'm not keen on tampons.

This thread is 5 years old. Grin

FreeNiki · 06/03/2017 01:06

I dont fancy going to the gym when i get my period.

Gushing, potential tampon leaking, reduced energy, cramps, etc.

Young women are no different. Just carry on.

FreeNiki · 06/03/2017 01:07

Where do these old threads come from?

joangray38 · 06/03/2017 01:18

I use diary doll pants - even if I leak it doesn't go through my pants
