Not wanting to grow up (be an adult)

My DD has mentioned this twice recently, once in a sort of jokey way and another time when she was ill, it worries me a bit, wondered if it was quite a common thing for teenagers to come out with? I remember not wanting to be 'mature' perhaps that is the same thing? She's 17 BTW.

I was exactly the same. In fact, it started much earlier on, when I was about 11. I used to close my ears in biology when the teacher talked about periods etc, because I didn't want them to happen to me.

I actually had a mini "breakdown" at 16 when I realised I was no longer a child and found it really hard to come to terms with

My 18 year old is struggiling(but getting better) with being a grown up although she is quite sensible etc she hates the responsibility i think it will come though . TBH i dont think its rare for teens to think this , when iw as 16 i was working when my dd was 16 she was going to town with friends and worrying about exams she was still at school (just) when she was 18 so i do think it takes time for them to grow up , some 17/18 year olds do it quicker than others ,

DD1 says this a lot, she's 20 but she hates the "admin" bits of adult life - all that sorting out problems with your bank account etc.

I would have thought it was quite common, DD1 wants all the fun without any responsibility!

Is your DD in year 13 ucasfracas? The whole applying to uni thing can be quite stressful especially when you can't imagine exactly what it will be like to leave home. DD2 handled it all a bit better because she could see her sister happily settled.

mrsjay · 16/01/2012 13:54

I know what you mean about the admin bit my dd hates doing this my 28 year old sister still gets my mum to do it all for her Shock . she will do it now except if she has to phone anybody she hates the phone and would rather email sigh

webwiz · 16/01/2012 13:57

Oh yes email rules here too!

I know everything is electronic nowadays but im really confused my her phobia of the phone , her car insurance company phoned a few days ago she went into a panic , she did manage to get through the call , I blame the internet for them being non communative (sp) its all texting etc ,

I'm 17 too and I feel the same about it, don't worry. It'll come with time, hopefully.

MudAndGlitter · 16/01/2012 17:45

I'm 22 and still feel like it Blush

ucasfracas · 17/01/2012 09:00

Thanks everyone, very reassuring. As for the phone/email thing, I much prefer email, maybe I've never grown up! Wink

I've hated the phone ever since an elderly relative thought I was someone else and questioned me extensively on my labour.
I was 9 at the time Confused

Meant to answer Webwiz. Yes she is in Y13 but as she is my DD2 she should be the one handling it better!

Well I do think there is a huge dollop of personality in these things! I noticed you on the ucas forum ucasfracas - hopefully she'll get her final offer soon (DD2 is in her first year studying maths at Bath)

ucasfracas · 17/01/2012 23:17

Thanks Webwiz, I'm hoping I may have some questions for you.
