Hello All - I would really apprecaite your thoughts.
My 15 yr old DD gets up 6.15 to 6.30 am. As last term went on she was going to bed later and later.

What time would you all suggest?? I think 9.30 but apparently that is too early according to DD!

I don't think there's any real point in bedtimes. As long as they wake up on time, that's the important thing. If your DD doesn't sleep enough one night, chances are she'll go to bed earlier the next to make up for it. You can't force the body into sleep. She'll just end up lying awake in the dark and being bored. If you're worried about what she's doing when she stays up, instead of a lights out rule, maybe say she can read or listen to music if she wants to? It's a relaxing activity that will aid sleep and education Smile

My rule was between 10 and 10.30pm, but both of mine needed their sleep, at least 8 hours.

A 16 yr old here - has to switch computer off by 10.30-10.45. Usually in bed by 11, and gets up at 7.30-ish.

I went to boarding school and was normally up at about 6.30 for shower before breakfast. The school policy was for 5th formers (YR11) should be in bed by 10, and lights out at 10.30. Once we were in 6th form we got the priviledge of staying up an extra half hour.

Having said this, my 15yr old son goes to bed at 11 on a good night and lights out whenever...although he does have sleep issues as well as other issues! Most of his friends stay up very late. I was advised by the doctor that 15yr olds need about 9-10 hours sleep a night.

My DD (just 16) goes to bed when I do, and has for a long time. About 10-10.30 in the week, a bit later at weekends. She gets up at 7. She sleeps late at the weekends, but doesn't usually seem tired. If she is, she will suggest early bed and go when she is ready.

LaughingGas · 12/02/2012 11:25

mine go when they like, I don't think you can make someone go to sleep on demand.

I remember when my paernts used to turn the light off and say it was time for bed when i was about 9 years old. i would like there for hours wide awake. it was horrible. Once we went to secondary school, it was bed when you felt like ti, and sometimes i would stay up late, the next night i may go to bed much earlier, It was so much better like that.

So mine have never had a bed time. Even from a primary school age.

About 10.30. But I wish it was earlier, she looks like death warmed up

startail · 12/02/2012 11:52

Please be in your room by 10-10.30pm.
Usually bed, but some times she unwinds sitting drawing. Lights out at 12 pm.
Been much the same since she started high school.
She takes her self to bed earlier when tired always has, from Toddlerdom.

We go to bed at 10 so dd is never going to be allowed to stay downstairs later than that. Right now it's 9pm on school nights and 9.30 on weekends/holidays.

She doesn't need to get up til 7.45 though.

My ds is nearly 14 and is always in bed with lights out at 9 on school nights. He wakes at 7. He never wants to get up. I'm more relaxed at weekends but dp and I are normally in bed by 10.30 anyway.

He normally has big lie ins at weekends though.

He's always been a good sleeper, even as a baby.
