Hello - I joined mumsnet to post this message - hoping you can help....

Little Gossip is now active again in the UK.

Students at my daughters college are anonymously posting libelous and cruel statements about her friends... I have contacted the college principal and he has authored an e-petition to the Department of Education. I have been able to dig out some information regarding who holds the owner information for the web content (see contact details below for reporting abuse to the hosting company).

I have tried going on there and making positive comments. There also seems to be quite a lot of posts on there recently pointing out that its not actually annoymous (as your isp? number can be traced and you have to give your e-mail address to post) and also the potential effects on others when you write hurtful things about them. LG themselves have been deleting some but not all of these comments and comments have appeared (which I think are from LG but impossible to tell for certain) telling people to carry on posting 'hilarious' comments and that they can't be traced.

The most shocking for me on this site is that in order to report a comment you have to give 'gossip' in return. So when I wanted to report a post which contained a very racist term I had to give 'gossip', a message then came saying that I may have to wait 24hrs for the offensive post to be removed. As it was it disappeared within minutes, but a no point was I asked why I wanted to report and presumably no action will be taken against the person who wrote the post. The whole reporting process seemed like a joke.

To be honest musicposy the language used is the same whatever school or college is on the site. Private, state - grammar school, girls school, sixth form college - it is universal. So I know it is horrid to think of your daughter being in that environment - but it is only a minority of children doing this and a minority of victims (not to underplay what they are going through).
I think parents should take more care about the sites their younger teenagers visit on the home computer - you can make them inaccessible.

wannaBe - I agree about the Twitter campaign - how would that work and what would the central message be - ? To get people to join the petition or to write to their MP - or email the site? Anything would help.

Well done LG - the content was disgraceful and libelous - 1 page gone - now to remove the rest.

Just spotted this so bringing to attention again in hope.

This is not a new hoster - this is the old one from last year.

There is a horrible development on the Little Gossip site. They have added the option to add a video via You Tube to illustrate your gossip. The obvious potential for identifying a child is clear - also to add even more layers of nastiness to your anonymous comments.
Anyone got any ideas on how to fight this??

The site went down today temporarily for them to add some kind of advertising which offers essays for money.
