Boys putting on weight before puberty?

DS1 12 (Yr 8) has put on quite a bit of weight during the last year or so. Nothing that is obvious with clothes on, he is a tall boy wearing age 13-14 which he needs for length rather than width. However, without clothes he has a very obvious tummy and looks very well padded.

Now his diet hasn't changed a great deal. He has school dinners and packed lunches and home cooked dinners and not much opportunity for spending his pocket money on junk food. I would also think that he is doing more exercise now than he did at primary school.

DH is all for taking a strict control of his diet, no more sweet stuff, pizzas etc (which I must say he doesnt have very often) but I am loath to do this at the moment and have also been told that children quite often put on a bit of weight before the growth spurt at puberty. Or is this a myth?

Obviously, I'm keeping an eye on it but I don't want to make a 'thing' about it with him.

Thanks

Hi, original poster here! DS1 is now 17, 6'2" and still growing I think! He is slim but not skinny. DS2 is in Y6 and has started to put a bit of weight on in the same way but I'm glad I wont feel I have to worry over it like I did 6 years ago with DS1. I think if you are sure (as you can be) that they are not getting into bad habits with snacking, are fairly active and eat a balanced diet, their weight will even itself out as they grow.

My 6'3 extremely skinny Ds was just the same at that age. I've since heard it's perfectly normal to lay down fat in preparation for the growth spurt of puberty.

Hi I don't know if anyone is still on here but I'm getting concerned about my son. He is now 5'10 at 14 but he is still quite chubby. He gets really down with his weight because he was a really fit and skinny boy before high school in England (about 11yrs) and did infinite amounts of sports everyday of the week I was just wondering if his weight gain is down to puberty even though he is 5'10 almost 6' at 14 is there still time for puberty to give him a big spurt. Ps he has been one of the tallest in primary school and his height has increased gradually rather than spurts also his voice has broke in the past 9 months. I know it's a losing shot but anyone?
