My ds is 11 nearly 12 and last night he set fire to his bedroom, luckly there wasn't to much damage but i don't understand why. He said he did'nt know why and he has never done anything like this before. Any suggestions would be great.

Don't replace anything that got damaged, at least for a while? As a sort of natural consequence of his actions?

How does he feel about what he did? Is he genuinely apologetic/embarassed?

3kids · 14/11/2005 07:47

I wasn't going to replace anything of his the trouble is he share's a room with his sn brother. The 2 boys had to sleep on the floor of their sister's room which upset them. He seems upset this morning he was crying because he said he would'nt be able to do anything again so i said do you think you should be punished and he just cried. I'm so angry and scared of what could've happened we only knew because are dd went upstairs to get ready for bed he was trying to put it out himself.

Do you think it was just experimentation that got out of hand?

I think, if you ask, you can have a Fire Safety Officer come round to check your house and advise on smoke alarms etc. Maybe you could ask for a check and they could also have a chat with your son?

We have got 2 smoke alarms. I just can't get my head round him doing it.

do you know what he started the fire with? I mean did he light something to start a fire, or is it possible he was secretly smoking in his room and had an accident? Not that one's ok and the other isnt, but if it was experimenting with fire then a trip to the fire station would be more appropriate than if it was experimenting with smoking.

3kids · 14/11/2005 10:30

He used a lighter to light a box. Do you just show up at fire station?

Local firemen were giving out leaflets outside the school just before the summer holidays this year. They mentioned it then.

Maybe your local Council or County Council could give you a number to call? Otherwise, in your situation, I would be happy to call on my local firestation.

i did this too! well, i didn't set fire to my room, but a friend and i sat in her room and burnt stuff in a metal tin! we got in a lot of trouble when her mum found out too..

it sounds like your son was just messing around, and it also sounds like he is really sorry.
Have a chat with him about how dangerous fire is.

3kids · 22/11/2005 09:57

We did have a very long chat about what could have happened and he wrote a story all about it. 2 pages of lines saying he would never do it again.(We never asked him to)
