Mine already preferred money by then.

crazynanna · 05/05/2011 23:03

Blackberries are defo in,the Curve is the cheapest.
My nearly 13 yo dd demands bags/shoes from a fella called 'Paul's Boutique',not as dear as a BB

Counterstrike · 05/05/2011 23:05

Has she investigated them?? Or is it just her friends havethem. As a teacher and mum of a 14 yo dd, dem blackberry's are very nickable (and she will take it to school).

Counterstrike · 05/05/2011 23:19

think she mostly wants bbm, most of her friends have them but she has surfed the net looking at diff phones.

I thought only businesspeople had Blackberrys. Why does a 13 need one, just for texting? Get her a normal phone- an iPhone or LG touch if it has to be fancy.

Others, Jack Wills clothes (if she wants a BB she'll probably like those), random things like books and CDs.

Counterstrike · 08/05/2011 22:09

Quirrel, what your saying is there is no reason for a 13yo to have a 100odd pound phone(blackberry) but every reason for a 400 quid one?(iPhone)

OP posts:
crazynanna · 09/05/2011 15:37

I can just about afford the BB...Iphone?

quirrelquarrel · 09/05/2011 17:49

Counterstrike-
I hadn't realised that there was that much of a price difference (plus you don't have to get iPhones new- why not try the Apple reject shop), but the iPhone does have tons more for a 13 year old- games, films, music etc. The BB is more for people with hundreds of business contacts who need to send emails because their messages are long and wordy.

But yes, I hadn't realised that it was so much more expensive. Another phone, then.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/05/2011 21:32

My DD had her ears pierced and tickets to the Black Eyed Peas for her 13th!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/05/2011 21:33

Have to say round here Blackberry is the phone of choice, the iphone is so like yesterday ( for teens)

crazynanna · 09/05/2011 21:39

RatherBeOnThePiste the iphone is so like never for my teen Grin

Counterstrike · 09/05/2011 22:09

hmm..well she already has an iPod touch so she really doesn't need an iPhone. Any other ideas ;)

My dd has just had a book about The Beatles and a t-shirt for her 14th birthday. All this talk of Blackberries and i-phones and so on for children amazes me tbh. It sounds like you'd be spending the money for the sake of it to me and I don't understand why anybody would do that.

Pulls judgey pants firmly up and wanders off.

quirrelquarrel · 10/05/2011 07:19

I don't think expensive phones etc are great for kids (I really thought the iPhone had gone down in price anyway), but since the OP was asking about it, I suggested an alternative. Better to have a stupidly expensive phone you can do lots of things with than a stupidly expensive phone that's just a status symbol.

You can spend a lot of money for kids' birthdays and still not spoil them (i.e. the rest of the year). Obviously the OP isn't just giving out money without thinking about it, it's a birthday present. I was pretty surprised- at 14 I was getting things like books and little things, but that's what I wanted. I didn't want a phone. If I'd have wanted a phone, it would have been different, regardless of the huge price difference. So it is about getting stuff you're going to love rather than keeping up with those dratted Joneses.

Counterstrike · 10/05/2011 20:42

She doesn't get spoilt for the rest of the year, I just buy her clothes and essentials ect ect. She is very into books but she already has leftover vouchers

Leftover book tokens? Am v Envy!

Have you decided what you're going to get her? DD2 claims to want to buy a new phone with her birthday money from relatives (although she has a perfectly workmanlike one already) but I don't think I'd want it to cost more than 40 pounds or so. Then again, I can't get excited by the dratted things at all, so I may be way out of the loop in terms of how much they cost!
