sanitary towels for young teens

My dd is 11.5 and has quite a bit of discharge at times. She is in year 6 and quite anxious about starting her periods at school. I bought her some sanitary towels so she could take one in her book bag but they seem quite big. My baby was kicking off in boots so although I tried to find something appropriate to her age he was having none of it. Can anyone recommend a towel/brand I should be looking out for. She doesn't like the idea of wings.Thank you.

Any 'regular' flow ones shouldn't be too bulky. Tbh I would try and get her to reconsider the wings as well- my mum refused to buy them for some reason and I suffered terrible leaks as a result

My sister recently gave my DD a lovely present when she started spotting. It was a small Hello Kitty bag with sanitary towels, disposable bags for the towels and small packet of flushable toilet wipes. It was lovely, and teenagy and she carries it in her school bag all the time. I just added a spare pair of knickers (she's also got one pair in her PE bag!). I think the brand is Always.

Thank you both. I'm sure it'll take some trial and error to find what is comfortable for her. I'm doing my online weekly shop atm so I'll have a look. I wonder where your sister got that from vints. I'll have a google. I have given her a little drawstring bag with a pre-wrapped towel. I'll never forget getting a book out of my bag at school and a tampax flying halfway across the classroom! Thanks again

What about pre wrapped panty liners rather than a towel, if she hasnt actually started yet?
slightly smaller and more discreet should she be worried about that.

My DD likes Always. They've got wings (less likely to leak as BooBoo said) and are thin and discreet so she's more comfortable. She stashes her towels in a little makeup bag in her school bag.

I'd suggest buying different brands and sizes at first to let her decide which suit her best.

Thanks again. I'll have a look at panty liners. The sts I've got are pre-wrapped. Always seems like a popular choice.

I'd look at panty liners too. Just the cheap basic ones are fine if she's going to put it on before school, but I think you can get individually wrapped ones if she wants to keep one in her bag.

I wouldn't bother with sanitary towels, except maybe having a box at home in preparation. Her first period is unlikely to start with a gush.

dd uses Always normal without wings and individually wrappped panty liners. Her flow is very light. She keeps them adn a spare pair of pants in a little makeup bag in her school bag.

I got a really trendy case designed specifically to hold one or two towels from Boots. DD says all the girls carry them around for school, its quite the done thing. Always Ultra Normal with wings seem ok to me.

Yes definitely get pantyliners rather than pads. You can get individually wrapped ones of these too. My favourite kind are "Cottons" which you can get in Boots, or the Always brand are called Alldays and you can get them anywhere. I also found the tesco own brand ones good (in a purple box with a flower on).

Pantyliners are definitely enough to cope with discharge, they will cope with the first spotting you get before you start periods properly too. And they're cheaper than sanitary towels, more comfy to wear and you can change them as often as you want without feeling it's a waste.

You could give her a small makeup bag or pencil case with one or two sanitary towels, small pack of wet wipes and/or tissues and a clean pair of knickers as an "emergency period kit" to help her feel confident that she is prepared if she does start at school, but I wouldn't use sanitary towels for discharge, they're too drying to be comfortable to wear every day.

I second the individually wrapped liner/pads. DD has this little zipped purse thing from accessorise with two liners/pad things, and also two paracetamols, she is 13.

there is a company that sells young teens' sanitary products, smaller towels, pretty bags etc. They seemed good to me when i googled it for my dd a few years ago. One thing i was cross about was skl didn't have any liners available when dd was 'surprised' in yr 6. I sent in a pack for office staff to have in case. But very sweet lady did go out to boots in her lunchtime!
