Limiting TV Viewing for teens

My 13 year old is watching far too much TV. We have tried to limit the amount she watches but it never seems to last. I have read of TV Limiting Devices that you attach to the TV. Has anyone heard of these and have any idea where I can get one?

Can't find any in the UK, but is this any help?

THis on (from my previous link) is the only one to operate internationally. It's not too dear...

This is one of my reasons for not having a TV in a bedroom. If you have then take it out and have it in a joint room.
I would tell her to mark the programmes she wants to watch and that it will go off for the rest of the time, but you need to give her a time limit to choose from.
I would tell her that if it causes too many arguments you will simply live without a TV (but you have to mean it, my DCs know that I would quite happily manage without.)

What are you considering too much? Have you discussed this with your DD? Is it how much she watches or what she watches you object to?

We have had a device [TV Timer] which effectively cuts the power to the tv at a certain time. It can be set to allow a set number of hours or to go off whenever you want it to.

We have used one for Dd2 [15] for a long time, she has a tv in her room [big mistake] but is a nightmare for not turning it off. Or rather turning it back on after we turn it off.

It has a pin number so only you can set it.

It cost us about £25 3 years ago but worth every penny. If we didn't have it she would watch tv all night and it stops any arguments.

Have to say tho she can often be found watching DVD's on he laptop in the middle of the night, but that is dead easy to remove from the room.

Good luck in finding one and you have my sympathy

hi im 16 and doing my gcse's this year. my older siser has just left college and about 4 years ago my dad flipped because we wouldnt help out around the house, were rude to my mum and just watched tv.

he took the spark plugs out of all tvs and hid them. we watched absolutle no tv for a term and then iplayer and 4od entered our lives. however, despite us both having laptops we just couldnt be bothered to download any programmes, only the ones we really wanted to watch.

after about three months we had a compramise and and only watched tv at weekends. last year when my sister finised college, the ban was lifted and i realise how much it had helped me. i have actually asked for it to be put back on so i dont get destracted.

it was possibly the best thing that ever happened to me so parents, give it a go!

good luck

TCJ, is the TV in her room? Just remove it and take the inevitable pain & strops for a few days.
