driving instructors

The big companies seem cheaper, and at least one is doing a special offer at the moment. It looks like you just book on-line and get allocated an instructor.
Or do people go for a word of mouth recommendation?

was watching tv (again!) & they were saying that a lot of the big companies are using a lot of 'trainee' instructors - which is well dodgy, and still charging full price.
Apparently you can tell by the colour of their licence.

We went for a local family owned company for DD1 and I was really happy with the instructor (she passed first time). I requested the same instructor for DD2 two years later and she is just about to book her test. I hope he's still an instructor when its DS's turn. A few of DD1's friends didn't get on so well with the big companies.

The driving instructor we used for ds was fine, but the one for dd was absolutely brilliant, and I would recommend him without hesitation.

I've heard the same about trainee instructors being used by some companies, so independent would probably be best.

i had a driving instructor who spent the whole time either on the mobile to her dd or telling me all her probs with dd - if only had known about mumsnet i might have passed!!!!!

Thank you all. you've helped me to make up my mind. From your comments, I think I will go with the recommendation (alas more expensive) rather than one of the big companies. I don't want Dc to have a trainee! Main priority is learning to be safe driver...
