Is this a normal reaction

DD freaked out when I threatened to break in to the bathroom/toilet if she continued to spend so long in there in the morning. She said I didn't trust her which has now got me worried because I really only thought she was going back to sleep in there?

How old is she?

lia66 · 01/12/2010 14:51

when you say freaked out, how exactly? And what do you consider so long?

Foyled · 01/12/2010 15:00

16

At least half an hour (when it is making her late).

Initially said she would leave home if I did it.

When I went in later she brought the subject up and seemed quite upset, not screaming or shouting (which would be more normal frankly)

What is worrying you about it though? Do you think she is doing something she shouldn't be in there?

If this is where she gets ready then I'd say half hour is average for her age.

Foyled · 01/12/2010 15:11

She gets dressed has a wash, cleans teeth, no makeup or hair done usually emerges without shoes or socks.

I didn't think she was until she got so cross at my suggestion, but maybe just the invasion of privacy thing.

I suppose I'm saying "is it normal to be incensed about it?"

Also when someone says "you don't trust me" can you trust them?

maybe she is using the toilet and got embarassed when you said you were going to come in

My insensitive dh always makes a point of shouting throught the door "are you doing a poo?" if anyone is in there longer than 2 minutes, very bloody irritating, fuck off will you, (dh not you obviously)

They are funny at this age, normal to be incensed at anything we consider trivial imo

Can't help with the trust me scenario i'm afriad cos I've been led down the garden path by my almost 16 yr dd many a times by that one,

Foyled · 01/12/2010 15:28

I only threatened to do it she wasn't there at the time. I'm sure she is on the loo though, half asleep I think.

You've made me think there is probably nothing odd going on, just need to stop her staying there so long!

maybe have a little chat later and say something like

Gosh you were in a bit of a mood this morning weren't you? Are you ok? Kind of thing

My dd is my eldset of 5 so am learning all this as I go along too, we can't do right for doing wrong can we? Bloody teenagers. :)

Foyled · 01/12/2010 16:47

She is my second and quite different to the first!

I made the threat last night but agreed not to carry it out.

All part of an ongoing problem which means she is in serious trouble at school re lateness and other things. Sad

Half an hour in the bathroom isn't taht long in the morning. All 3 of my girls used to take at least that long. I would all 3 of them would have been very embaressed and annoyed if I had threatened to break in.

mumeeee · 02/12/2010 15:34

They would have be annoyed if I had threatened that I was going to do it and they weren#t in there at the time. I think this is something you should just let her get on with. Just sugest she tries to get up earlier

MrManager · 03/12/2010 00:48

As a younger man I would take [clears throat] 'long showers'. Don't know if girls are the same.

Foyled · 03/12/2010 15:03

Normal reaction then...well that's good, no further with the lateness though!
