Can you silence everything on your phone but keep phone calls coming through?

So I have multiple chats on WhatsApp, notifications from about 60 odd apps every single hour of the day, especially group chats with friends when it’s non stop and I am trying to sleep, the pinging drives me crazy at night so I always put my phone on silent, however I actually hate doing this as I worry incase someone like my Mum, Husband when he is away or any family member or friend are trying to reach me in the night due to an emergency and I miss them as my phone is on silent. I am not very tech savvy at all despite only being 31. Can anyone please tell me how I can stop all notifications sounds on all apps when my phone is on loud so I don’t miss potential calls.

I know you can mute chats etc but surely I don’t have to keep changing this everyday and every night? Thanks in advance.

What kind of phone do you have? I can do this on my Samsung phone.

Go into your phone settings and turn off all notifications. You'll still get phone calls.

Yes, either for everything at once or on each individual app.
I have text, WhatsApp, email silenced and only get phone calls and calendar notifications.

On an iPhone you can do this with “do not disturb”. You can customise the settings for do not disturb to still allow calls and / or to still send notifications from certain people

I have a 'bedtime mode' on my phone (android, Google pixel). I can set what time this comes on each night and it switches automatically. The screen goes black and white until the morning which makes scrolling less appealing and the mode mutes all notifications, but you can specify who you can be interrupted by...text and calls (I have my parents, exH's parents and exH). I set it for the same reasons; I like my phone on silent but scared I may miss an urgent call in the night about our shared DC or my parents etc.

Absolutely yes!
Exact set up will depend on phone but on Galaxy (S25 but previous Samsung phones were same) go to Settings > Modes and Routines.
There use the 'Sleep' one but you can also set up a 'Work' one or whatever.
You set time you wish to over and then choose what the mode does. E.g. for Sleep I have set from 11pm to 7am, with Do Not Disturb and Restricted App Usage.
With Do not disturb I allow calls and messages only.from certain family and restricted app so I cannot use those after a certain time..
It's quite flexible - if you wanted a daytime one u could set up differently

Yes, my bed time mode settings will allow phone calls from my contact lists and non-contacts, if they call repeatedly.

I just hope that if someone external like police needed to call me, they would know to call twice. But it seems to be pretty standard option, so I have hopes.

@AuraBora@FourSevenThree@LemonDrizzlecake12@Pippipumpkin@Pringlebeak@Throwntothewolves@tourdefrance tagging you all in as I should have probably mentioned that I have an iPhone (told you I wasn’t tech savvy!) 😂 I just didn’t even think. I feel really stupid but If anyone could maybe do a sort of step by step dummy guide for me on what to do that would be amazing. There is probably a few ways I could do this. Thank you all

@Biosblbay in iPhone, at least on mine, it is stupidly buried in "Focus". If you go in there, you will find various options. Just search "focus" if it's not obvious where it is. It probably isn't obvious. iThings used to be the most intuitive set up and now it's absolutely awful.

you might have to select every app the first time, but after that it will activate automatically for whatever night timeframe you give it

You can also silence calls from particular people or do "everyone except" I think

I don't really understand people who have several apps pinging at them constantly, but I do think perhaps some of them just don't know how to change it.

there may be an easier way to do it, but it took me ages to even find this one! I did it ages ago and I'm on iPhone 12 but I hope this helps you in some way.

JustGiveMeReason · 11/04/2026 00:44

You can just turn your wifi and data off.
Then none of the notifications will happen, but phone calls would still come through.

LemonDrizzlecake12 · 11/04/2026 08:12

Go to settings, focus, do not disturb. From there you can set a schedule for do not disturb to come on every day/night at certain times. Under “people” you can allow all calls or certain calls.
