Thinking of switching to Broadband only

Ok I know I will sound like a real numbskull but this really isn't my area of knowledge. (Understatement 😁)

Our current 2yr broadband/phone and anytime calls package ends mid June. Looking around at deals now and everything appears to be for Broadband only. As these appear to be quite a bit cheaper and we both have mobiles we are considering of getting rid of the landline. I know landlines are being scrapped in 2027 anyway so may be worth changing in the next few months.

However, how do you stop the landline? Would we just look for a broadband only deal and would that just cancel out the landline or do we need to do something to officially get rid of it?

Hope this makes sense.

You just cancel the contract.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 17/02/2025 15:35

Cancel the contract.

BakedBeansforabrain · 17/02/2025 15:43

Don't just cancel the contract

About the beginning of June decide who you want to switch to and they will automatically cancel your current one and then switch you to them.

Landlines aren't being cancelled they are being switched to connect over the broadband internet

We have just switched to EE and the landline is included at no extra price

What I didn't know that under the old contract between 7pm and 7am all calls were free, under the new contract you gave to pay for all the calls

Just done exactly this and save about £20 per month with BT.

Depends where you live. If you always have a good mobile signal and don't have broadband or power outages, go ahead. If not I would make sure you have plenty of charged phone battery packs in case your power goes off.

Landlines aren't being scrapped. Houses will still have phones if the residents want them. However the analogue lines are being replaced by digital only services. This unfortunately will make life more difficult for those who live in 'remote' areas who have power outages and might not have a mobile signal, as well as older people who might not have mobiles. I put 'remote' in inverted commas, because this affects my mum who lives 30 miles from London!

In effect they, if you have a power cut they will not work as they will be plugged into your router.
Current landlines are powered separately - by some magical wizardry from the old telephone exchange.

Wow thanks everyone at the great responses.

I was under the impression landlines would be scrapped altogether in 2027 so that's new info to me. (Bit of an oldie sorry 😂)

Can't say the signal is fantastic on the mobile - we are semi rural - and would prefer to keep the landline if possible. I suppose the best thing to do would be to discuss with our current package provider when due for renewal.

If we do switch to broadband only then one of us would need to go on "Contract," as our mobiles are rarely used for calls at present - mostly WhatsApp, emails and mine for Mnet of course - we are both on PAYG, (£20 last about 18 months 😂) - so contract cost could wipe out any saving. Very confusing for an aging brain. 🤣

Oh and our landline doesn't work when we have a power cut. We have had 4 over recent months.☹️

Yes the way the old lines were powered to how the new fibre lines are powered is different

I have an inverter which I can plug in a rechargeable battery and then plug in a small electrical device to run it when there was a power cut.

About a year ago we had a power cut and I used the inverter to power the router.

We have since had super fast fibre installed and had a power cut last week and the inverter wouldn't work with the new fibre internet

JadeSeahorse · 17/02/2025 19:47

BakedBeansforabrain that is way too technical for me sorry.

Wouldnt have a clue about plugging an invertible or even what one is.☹️

Thanks for taking the time to suggest it though.
