Why are my network speeds so much slower than my hub?

Recently upgraded to gigafast internet, should have 600mbps, Sky app says I am getting 670mbps to my hub.

WiFi devices are around 300mbps which I suppose it to be expected, we have a lot and the hub is in a cupboard which I know isn't ideal (it's where our switches are).

But even devices I've got connected via Ethernet are only getting 315mbps (just rechecked and it's now only saying 286!) I thought Ethernet was the best?

So a laptop plugged directly into the router via Ethernet is getting less than 300?

do you have any wifi boosters?

And I've just checked in the kitchen (we have Ethernet ports in all our rooms downstairs) and it's only 88mbps?!

Not plugged in directly to the router, but via the Ethernet ports in our house

We have a wifi booster upstairs

And I've just plugged a laptop directly into the router and it's only getting 200. This makes no sense to me.

2.4 GHz WiFi will support up to 450 Mbps, so that will explain the lower speed for that.Is your house wired for ethernet, and if so when was it done?

ICDIWABH · 14/09/2024 12:59

Ethernet ports around the house will throttle your speed because they don't normally have the correct Ethernet cables to support the fast speeds. You need cat6 Ethernet cables. Also with your devices, If the actual Ethernet port is not 1gb capable your device won't pick up the fast speeds

Thanks, I'm happy with the wireless speed tbh but have our streaming and gaming devices connected to Ethernet in the hopes of a fast and stable connection so want that to be better.

Yes it was, new build house in 2020, the wired connections are working they're just running slow, slower than the wifi. My Ethernet cables are cat6.

...and is your ethernet connected to a switch or a router? The former can usually only handle 100 Mbps, unless it's a Gigabit switch.
Remember that Ethernet comes in different classes, from 10base-t to 2.5Gbase-t

It's likely your devices/cables/mesh not being able to cope with the higher speed

Plug your laptop directly into the router with a short Ethernet cable and run a speed test. You should see the speed increase. Try different cables.

So the router is directly connected to the wall (I've forgotten what it's called it's not one of those small Ethernet white box it's a big white box that has 'port 1', 'LOS' written on it)

I've plugged the laptop directly into the router and it got 200 one time but less than 100 one time.

Although my laptop doesn't have an Ethernet port so I am having to use a type C converter which might make a difference?

I also use a USB C to RJ45 ethernet adapter and can get (near as dam it) 1Gbit p/s so it probably isn't the reason your seeing lower than expected performance when connected to the router.

Do you have another device that you can test the connection to verify?

I also have ethernet throughout my house and get a reliable 950Mbit p/s on all connections, (with Cat5e cabling, Uni-fi Router and 1Gbit switches).

GPTec1 · 16/09/2024 14:37

If you re only getting 200 on ethernet (assuming the usb c to rj45 adapter is correctly set up) and 300 on wifi, then i'd suggest that whatever your sky app is saying its wrong, your router or devices inc sky boxes, connected to it, could be throttling the speed or the network speed isn't 600.

Try using a speed test called iperf and switch off all wifi/unplug/disconnect any sky boxes for wifi, then test.

So long as any cabling cat5e, then thats all good, can you change the cable between sky router and the network modem?
