Brand new iPhone 13 is getting warm while browsing Safari and while charging

I’ve had one iPhone that has done similar when new in the past and within six months the battery was buggered.

Am I right to think that the battery shouldn’t be getting so warm simply while browsing the internet and while charging through a cable?

Tempted to take it back…

quite normal, especially if charging via USB C, as it's potentially higher wattage depending on the charger used.

Either way the phone knows the temperature of the battery and will pause the charging.

My Iphone 15 does this and it’s pretty new. If I leave it to charge without using it, then it doesn’t overheat at all

They get warm when browsing the internet if they are struggling to find a signal, I get it a lot on holiday in poor mobile signal areas.

If you're somewhere with poor mobile signal but which does have WiFi, put it in aeroplane mode (that stops it desperately searching) and then turn the Wi-Fi back on. I only recently twigged to do that when we were on holiday recently.

OP, maybe use the high power fast charger when you're not using it or need a fast charge, but get a low power one if you want to charge while using if you're worried about the heat? But my understanding is that the newer chargers/usbc cables are smart so it shouldn't be a problem nowadays.like it used to be,

Our cars have 2 usb connections - a normal one that just charges and then the one which connects to the ApplePlay. Because that's designed for you to plug your phone into for a journey, it's deliberately low power so it trickle charges enough to stop the battery draining and gradually charge it, but not enough to heat the phone,

OP, sorry, I fear you've got a dud, and that Apple are producing them with regularity. Here's my story:

I bought an iPhoneSE last year that overheated when charging as you describe. And the battery staying power was hopeless. I took it back and they admitted it was faulty and replaced the battery. But I'm sorry to say that while that resolved the overheating issue, the battery remained rubbish. For this reason, I've just traded it in and upgraded to an iPhone13. My new 13 doesn't heat when charging and the battery lasts wonderfully long.

The IT manager at work said it never works well when they replace a battery. It makes me cross that iPhones are so very expensive and yet the quality is not guaranteed. And crosser still that nonetheless I've stuck with Apple because it's what I know. They shouldn't get away with this but in my case they have. Your phone should NOT overheat while charging - it's as simple as that.

I'd be taking it back and asking for another. You're out of the 14 days so you'll have to book an Apple appointment rather than go to who you purchased it from.
