New laptop - stupid question

Notquitegrownup2 · 27/09/2023 22:09

I've never bought a laptop before! Am getting a Dell as it's similar to my work laptop which I get on well with. I have order MS office to come with it but do I need to pay another £150 to Dell for online support to install it and set up my new computer or can I get a local person to set it up for me or should I be able to do it myself . . .

Thank you

Do it yourself. Computers are pretty foolproof these days.

Definitely do it yourself. Mine literally had a step by step process which I followed and then it was ready.

Thank you. That was my guy feeling. Second stupid question. Was the process you followed appear on screen, or do you have to install something to get the instructions???

You should be able to set it up yourself.
I'm nearly seventy and learned nothing about IT at school or work, and I managed it.

When you turn it on, it will go through a setup process with you. This is basically how it works:

When you turn the computer on it should come up with a screen telling you exactly what to do, you don’t have to install anything really anymore! If you find yourself struggling I’d definitely ask a friend or colleague to see if they can instead of paying someone xx

The only stupid questions are those that are not asked (said by a wise person, followed by me) 😊

DIY. It’s really easy. If you get stuck, come back here and people will help you out. But these days it’s all on-screen prompts and that you follow.

Good for you, have met lots of people 40 and below who would not know where to start, who think apps are the whole Internet 🙄
