Scanning old photos to digital?

Hi all!

Any techies here that can give me some guidance... or has anyone personally scanned old photo albums to digital format?

I've got my M&S's old family photo albums that I'd like to scan into digital albums to share with my siblings. Whilst I know you can take photos using iPhone, I've read somewhere that scanning using a flatbed scanner gives better quality digital photos, from which my siblings can print off better quality photos if they choose to.

I've already got a scanner, but would like advice on where best to store the photos... and if I should use a specific App or software to manage the photos. I've read that Google Photos is free (at least at the moment!), but I'm wary of using something that might disappear in the future. I used to store photos on Picasa which disappeared... along with all my uploads. I don't want to get burned twice.

Aside of scanning the photos, I figure I would save them by year and month (if known) and special event (eg Christmas), but I'm not sure if I should try to change individual photo titles to include siblings' initials, so that they can each easily find photos which include them.

Storage wise, I'd be happy to buy individual hard drives to give to each of them, but maybe putting them on the cloud would be easier. I'm the only Mac user; the others are PC users, so would need something that works for all of us.

Any help/advice on how to approach this project (or pitfalls to avoid) would be greatly appreciated.
