I have just stepped down as Secretary from a group which has a gmail account which I need to pass to my successor. I have given her the password but she can’t log in and I have had a critical error message in response to her attempted sign in.
How do I solve this?
If I replace the existing recovery email address (which is mine) with hers will she then be able to log in and somehow recover the account and make it hers?

I don’t want to end up with both of us locked out!

It sounds like she's not typing the password in correctly, to be honest. Have you tried logging out of Gmail yourself and logging back in with the password?

Do you have two-step verification turned on for the account?

Is this the error you got from Google, 'Suspicious sign in prevented'?

I can log in with existing password. I don’t have two-step verification on. The message says ‘Suspicious attempt to sign in with your password’.
Clicking on the ‘Check activity’ box brings up the message ‘Google prevented someone who knows your password from signing in to your account. If this wasn’t you, you should change your password immediately’
There is an option after that to say yes, it was me or no it wasn’t- secure the account.
I have not taken either of those options!

You need to click on yes it was me, then she'll be able to log in on her device. Gmail always sends this if you use a new device. Once she's logged in you can get her to change the recovery email to her own & change password, you then log off & she's in control

Yes, you just need to say it was you. Why didn't you do that?

Thanks for the replies. I didn’t do it as I was being a whimp! I’ve never had this particular message before and don’t want to end up with this account frozen as that would be right pain. Go a bit cautious.

Well presumably you've never logged in using her device!

Thanks for the replies. We have got it sorted now!

I get these all of the time as we use a VPN so our gmail constantly alerts us that someone using a different device is trying to log on to our gmail.

Gmail/Google mail ignores extra dots in the name, but there are arguments online about people who have existing addresses with dots and the risk of mail going to someone creating a new address without dots

I would prefer to create ‘spare’ accounts with spelling variations and to set a forward from each of them
That covers most eventualities
