Connecting tv to ipad

Is the correct term mirroring? I can connect the tv (not a smart one) to my laptop via an HDMI cable. I would prefer to use my ipad (ipad mini 2 software 12.5.7) via an apple certified adaptor, but it doesn't work. Is that because my ipad is too old? If so, what version should I buy?

What are you trying to do, use the TV as a monitor for browsing? Gaming?

Watch TV, Netflix content etc through the TV?

Thanks for responding. I want to be able to watch youtube videos through the tv, and stuff from iplayer. My partner's got dementia and he's in a care home. he has a tv in his room but it's not a smart one. I can pick out things he likes (mostly boats and fishing). I don't want to have to lug my laptop up there, it would be so much easier if I could do it via my ipad and I would be happy to upgrade if that's the problem.

Might be easier to upgrade the TV if you’re happy/able to do that. Then you can just cast to the TV on whatever app you’re using - no cables needed.

eg on YouTube videos you’d just click this button to find the TV on the wireless network:

How about an Amazon fire stick?
Cheaper option than replacing the tv.

BlueHotel · 03/02/2023 23:35

I had thought about the tv ... I'll have a look what's available. I know some of the other residents' relatives have done that. And I'll look at a firestick too. I don't know how they work, but one of my friends has one. Thanks for the suggestions.

Oh god yes, do fire stick or Google chromecast thing.

They're really similar and both really easy to work so go for whatever is best value. Probably the fire stick. It would just take 5mins to set up and is honestly easy to use.

Check on your partner's tv that it has an HDMI slot first though! It would have to be a REALLY old TV to not have one.

Yes it has got one and I can connect the tv to my laptop with an hdmi cable and it works. But it doesn't work with my ipad. I'm going to think about buying him a smart tv or getting a firestick, have to get my head around a firestick first though. Somebody told me you can't get youtube on a firestick, but having googled it I find that now you can.

So this is how I think it works, please someone correct or confirm. The firestick comes with an adaptor which you plug into the hdmi socket on the tv and into the firestick. The firestick also needs to be plugged into a power source. Some types act like a remote, some you can use via Alexa. I don't think I need 4K just to watch youtube videos and stuff on netflix and iplayer. Does anyone have a recommendation? Thank you all for helping.

It might be easier for you to just get an AppleTV

TheSpottedZebra · 05/02/2023 13:41

Exactly as you say. The firestick plugs into a power socket, and the HDMI slot of the TV.

You need to set up the firestick, which is very quick. The default is that it comes registered to the buyer, ie your amazon account. Then you need to set the profile, download the apps ie iplayer, YouTube etc. This bit is easy. Then you log into THOSE apps so your favourite shows are carried over. So you'd need all your existing log in into.

Then you change the source 9n the TV to HDMI and you're innthe firestick menu. Using the firestick remote, select the TV app-eg you tube - and then select the content you want.

The cheapest firestick is about £30 I think but does get reduced every now and then. That's fine! It doesn't have the TV controls on that remote (so you still need TV remote for volume etc) and isn't 4k. But you can rewind videos if you miss what they said!

This probably the easiest to use/best value option.

TheSpottedZebra · 05/02/2023 13:43

NB so you don't actually need the ipad at all.
Also, I didnt check but he does have a WiFi signal, right? You're not having to download shows to your laptop first?

BlueHotel · 05/02/2023 19:29

Thank you TheSpottedZebra that's very reassuring, I think I'll go for that option. And yes, he does have wifi.

This is why I don't want an iPhone or ipad. With android phones it's easy to cast to TV using Chrome Cast.

Years ago we used to plug an iPad into the TV using three round connectors that plugged into the front of the TV (TV was quite old too...).

A Now TV/Roku stick is an alternative to a Firestick.
